@KenGardner11 @minervas_muse "Independents" are low-info voters. At this point, you either like Trump or you don't. They don't really vote in primaries. Turnout in these races are always low and among the politically engaged. In the Republican primaries the politically engaged are MAGA voters

Not sure how to reconcile Trump's dismal poll numbers with how actual voters vote in races in which he has been involved, both in 2024 and 2026. Not buying the notion that independents dislike Trump as much as Democrats do. Maybe something isn't quite right with the polling.

Seriously that poor man speaks like them and gestures like them and never got a good education to utilize his superior intellect. I have told people about this and they don't believe me. There are white people in these countries literally abandoned by their own and who are essentially stuck in a life worse than a nightmare.

@feelsdesperate People exaggerate the salary needed to live in NYC insanely. The median income is $80k. That is a perfectly liveable wage in the city and if you can’t make it work on that salary alone, you’re an idiot.

This is a good example of what radicalizes Mamdani’s base: Ostensibly the type of person who takes this job is going to be sort of smart and well educated (credentialed) but they’re only going to be comfortable financially and lifestyle-wise in NYC if they have a trust fund or it’s a second-income vanity career. You can get off a plane from wherever and barely speak English and make this much driving an Uber. Nurses in NYC can easily make $150k a year. The dynamics of our economy that funnel people into these sort-of-high-status/ mediocre-salary jobs make them insane and then they become Leftists who want to burn everything down.

I think you're missing her point because you're being unnecessarily obtuse. Rand would define a monopoly - a true monopoly - as a permanent state. Not an unreasonable definition. She says that cannot exist because ingenuity can always overcome the barriers to entry (or creation of new, alternative markets) in a capitalist system. So in her view, "temporary" monopolies are not safe in the same way that government monopolies that we've witnessed in the energy or healthcare sector are.

This is her dumbest take. Monopolies form naturally. Monopolies are much more profitable than competitive industries. So if you find yourself in a competitive industry, it makes sense to buy out or collude with all your competitors, or to temporarily take a loss in order to drive them out of business. The government itself is a naturally-forming monopoly on violence. Ayn Rand is frequently guilty of this kind of magical thinking in which everything would be perfect if the government just disappeared. Well, there are still large parts of Africa today in which there is effectively no government. Is it utopia? Meanwhile the Industrial Revolution could not have taken place without the financial incentives put in place by intellectual property law such as patents, which require an incredibly strong government to enforce. The right really needs to get away from this whole “everything the government does is bad” loser mindset.
Sowell Economics@sowelleconomics

Ayn Rand: "Under a free system, no one could acquire a monopoly on anything. If you look at economics, and economic history, you will discover that all monopolies have been established with government help."

@spank_williamjr @mattyglesias @JTLonsdale @ZacharyGraves Matt’s original question was simply “What ‘Red City’ was doing well on crime…if it’s trending down in Ft Worth, then it’s doing well. The NYC, SF, question is sort of falling into the logic trap of “Why don’t we do what Scandavia is doing around xyz policy”

People ask me how they can start making money trading mentions. The free-est things you can do is watch these mention markets on sports matches with 0 volume that no one wants to trade/pay attention to, keep track of which strikes are said and when and then keep buying them after the fact. They normally don't get bonded to 99c because there aren't enough people who care to do that. So you can just farm $100+ in free money every game if you're willing to sit down for a few hours. Here I made 900$ clicking a word that was already said! Go make some money!

Question is why there isnt Indian Hedge Funds, Trading Firms, Market Makers in indian stock market with high scale. The ones I see are either satellite offices of firms already in US/EU or Much smaller operation which honestly any other firm can one shot them out.

Good point on income ratio. However, doesn’t change the fact that 650k home is nowhere near average. One wants to work in an industry where one’s limited to certain areas where home prices are not average. One then has to deal with enormous mortgage and possible financial ruin. Still a need vs want.

A guy I used to work with hit me up last night. Dude was making $260k in tech. Nice house, $4,700/month mortgage, two cars, vacations every few months. Got laid off 7 months ago. Still nothing. Said he’s down to $22k and burning $5,500 a month. Wife at home, one kid. He told me he checks his bank app before he even gets out of bed now. This is someone I saw winning in real life. Save your money. Because when it flips, it flips fast.

@shortyy1836 @StevenTDennis The gov takes in $4 trillion a year bud. The $200 billion collected is not doing shit. The BBB literally expands the deficit by a trillion a year. I’m sure you listen to everything Trump tells you, keep on waiting for that tariff dividend payment!

Company donated steel to ballroom, then got tariff exemption, per NYT.
Ana Swanson@AnaSwanson

@lukebroadwater President Trump said in October that he had been offered a donation of steel worth $37 million, though he did not name the donor. That announcement came just two days before the White House announced a tariff exemption that would benefit ArcelorMittal's Canadian plant.

@DrCola12 @StevenTDennis Are you retarded? The problem with not having any tariffs is we pay other countries tariffs and they take advantage of us, hence why the average American's tax bill before the BBB was absolutely insane 😬

Americans are getting laid off every day while foreigners on work visas, (often hired through ethno-nepotism, fake credentials, and shady kickbacks), get to live the American Dream. They're buying new oversized homes in Texas while American workers can't even start families.

If Harvard admitted students strictly by SAT score, filling slots in descending order starting at 1600, what would be the lowest SAT score admitted to the school? And what would be the resulting demographics of the student body?
