@paulg True. When I worked in banking it was pretty evident who was pulling the weight. Effort pays on this basis even when the direct impact is small for whatever reason.

Way more people see how hard you're trying (or not) than tell you about it. You know this from your own experience. Think how often you notice that someone is trying hard, or only pretending to, but don't say anything about it.

@FrankDeScushin I think the problem is having this discussion in the abstract is very tough. They can point to the most benign cases when the on the ground reality is very different. Ultimately I don’t think it’s something that can be stopped.

Right-wing identitarianism is right on the merits. The West's identity is being changed and the white majority's identity assailed. So why's it wrong to defend on identity grounds? Conservatism which eschews identity concerns still ends in the transformed West the Left wants.

@caroljsroth oh, it gets much worse than that. An old farmer passes away, and his son inherits. the father, say, bought the land for $300k, and developed it so that the value is now $1.3 mill. the son can't afford the taxes on $1 mill and has to sell the farm.

You buy a house for $300,000. 20 years later, govt says "Zillow values this house at $1,000,000-pay us tax on your $700,000 unrealized gain". Slow thinkers like you are paving the way for the middle class to have all their wealth stolen; the govt won't stop at "billionaires"

@wil_da_beast630 Often it isn't just that some newcomers will live nearby. That is generally quite welcome. The reality is demographic change often realistically manifests as replacement. Chinatown consumes Little Italy which consumed the English neighborhood that was once there.

@wil_da_beast630 I think a lot of people like and admire immigrants whose values and aspirations align with American norms (as traditionally conceived). Nonetheless, it can be disappointing to see one's particular culture and ethnos become marginalized.

This is an interesting and articulate position that I oppose. It's worth remembering that quite a few people - ~15% of the population - oppose the in-migration of high-quality and fairly patriotic Asian, Nigerian, Indian, etc immigrants...who NO ONE DENIES will do well....because they are not white.

Ultimate illustration of the "Mass Affluence" thesis. In 1970, only 9.7% of Americans were high income. Now the figure is 34.1%. These people "rose up" out of the old middle class. So now there is another large class sitting on top of the true middles. Feels bad.

The vast majority of those ticketed/arrested for farebeating are NYers of color — the very cohort getting priced out of the city by relentlessly increasing rents and… MTA fares. Rather than address this issue, we’re now going to spend even more public money punishing them? 🗑️🗑️

@DailySmelly I didn’t blame the bridge. The ship lost power it looks like. But I don’t think they just happens randomly unless it’s a horrific coincidence that led to a direct hit. And I’m sure the investigation will show many problems.

It will just be stuff like this, forever. Can modern post-America even build a new bridge?

In calendar year 2023, NYPD cops made over 13,600 arrests in the subway system. Of these 13,600 arrests, 124 people were arrested 5 or more times in the subway system in 2023 alone. When looking further, these 124 people combined, have been arrested over 7,500 times in their lifetimes. So, in case you’re curious what your cops are doing … well … they’ve arrested these people over 7,500 times!  The better questions are … where is the accountability & consequences for these repeat offenders? How is this happening? Look no further than the other stakeholders in the justice system … prosecutors, judges, and city & state lawmakers … whose decisions, in large part, determine the outcomes and consequences for every arrest we make and whose decisions have such far reaching impact on the safety of our subway system. With that said, make no mistake about it, your @NYPDnews cops remain focused and steadfast in their commitment to advancing public safety.

@AuronMacintyre Eh, I was recently reading annual reports of railroads from the 50s and 60s and can confirm that ships have been crashing into bridges causing serious damage for quite some time.

There’s been a lot of speculation over whether this was a result of cyber attack or just another example of our competency crisis One thing is for sure, we’ve created a system which is reliant on a level of complexity that we can’t securely maintain

Westfield, NJ, is redeveloping 7.3 acres of an abandoned department store and parking lot to build retail, offices, 138 senior, 21 affordable, and 29 market-rate housing units next to a NJT train station. This should be what every NY/NJ/CT station area looks like at minimum.

@melorshe @the_transit_guy Parking at a train station in a suburban area is important. That’s how people take the train instead of driving 25 miles to work. Commuting through a parking garage is a huge hassle for what’s already often an hour to and from Manhattan.

@the_transit_guy Garage parking is going to make commuting through that train station much less appealing. Redeveloping L&T is good but destroying the station lots is stupid and unnecessary.

@jhfgamble @paulg This is completely wrong. Under perfect competition firms have no pricing power. What they “want” doesn’t matter. They charge per unit their avg cost per unit (inclusive of cost of capital which is why firms generally have accounting profit and net free cash flow).

@Edgar_N_Jackson @paulg The higher the level of competition the less a company would want to pass they cost onto the customer. If is when there is no competition that a company is at liberty to pass the full cost onto the customer.

It is truly amazing how many people don't realize that costs imposed on a business are paid by the customers. Where do they think the money comes from?

@jhfgamble @paulg Yes and I’m agreeing with you. Just adding that under perfect competition the cost is largely borne by the consumer, but firms are subject to varying degrees of competition in reality.

@Edgar_N_Jackson @paulg Paul’s post is implying that any extra cost is always paid by the customer. I’m saying that it is possible for the shareholder to wear extra costs too. This is true in theory and happens regularly in practice
