Profit-motivated, automated enforcement provides no safety benefit, but lines the pockets of its purveyors…both the corrupt companies providing the services & their equally corrupt government co-conspirators. Here we have a solution searching for a non-existent problem…to facilitate theft from overwhelmingly reasonably behaving people under the guise of a concern for our children. Our school zones, thankfully, are already incredibly safe spaces for our kids. Quick data search indicates ZERO fatalities of children pedestrians in school zones in New Jersey going back 10 years! Rousing endorsement of our current practices. Zero justification for this bill.
Shlomo Schorr@OneJerseySchorr

A new bill introduced by New Jersey state Senator @Troy4NJ7 would allow counties and municipalities in the state to use automated speed enforcement cameras in school zones in limited circumstances. New Jersey state law currently prohibits speed cameras.

@BenDziobek Ben, I wish it were but it isn’t. Have you seen the size of the bridge? Where do you think all the traffic will go? Take a look at nbhce.njta.gov. This is nothing more than a delay while they create induced demand upriver.

@CouncilmemberKJ @PhillipsDist9 @RepNapoleon Philadelphia and Hoboken are both cities that @Nerd4Cities has covered in his urbanism channel, with lots of good things in common like narrow, pedestrian-friendly streets, bike lanes, access to transit and beautiful waterfront parks. Thank you for visiting us!

Traffic safety has been a priority under our administration + in Jersey City we were the 1st in NJ to adopt #VisionZero - you can see the changes 🚦 traffic related fatalities down 75% 🚲 More bike lanes + safer streets 🚧 Curb cuts, bump-outs, speed humps for the 1st time. You can actually see the change and the data backs it up.

Both pairs would become one-way: one northbound, one southbound. Major safety upgrade ahead Current setup: 4 lanes (2 each way). Proposed: ✅ 1 lane northbound ✅ 1 lane southbound ✅ 1 lane for protected bike lanes ✅ 1 lane for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) 🚗 All current parking stays to neutralize typical opposition.

@rohanjv @StevenFulop Hi!! My family relies on those protected bike lanes to travel everywhere safely. We need more of them not less. We pay taxes that pay for roadways too. We subsidize drivers and we are tired of it. There are 1000+ mi of car lanes in JC and only 20 mi of protected bike lanes.

While I support bike lanes, they are becoming too many, with roads getting narrower, increasing traffic and pollution. Have you driven across jersey city dropping kids to school, classes, or simply driving out? It’s a nightmare. Minimum 30 mins to get out of jersey city. Not sure how this will help.

I wrote this after we left @HudCoTweet last September. One huge deciding factor was the unsafe streets in @JerseyCity. I worked with Chris Adair, John Otto, Alec Perkins, @RonBautistaNJ and others to help get @BikeHoboken established in its infancy 10 years ago, then @CityofHoboken shortcut the Washington Street Bike Lanes by not protecting them from traffic and illegal parking. We then moved to Jersey City in the hopes that with the @SafeStreetsJC and @bikejc advocacy, things would be safer. Unfortunately it doesn’t matter how involved the community became (including night rides, and the Ward Tour), the elected leaders at the local and state level simply didn’t care. In fact, one of those leaders (@Amy_DeGise) hit and ran a cyclist in July of 2022. When that didn’t yield change or much in the way of consequences, it became clear that we were fighting an uphill battle. Change needs to be systemic. I implore @MikieSherrill to use her time as governor to put pressure on the state senate to implement change at the state level, and drive the urgency for bringing back red light and speed cameras in the state of New Jersey (and see to it that it is done so with correct implementation and ongoing calibration this time). It may be too late for young Eli (z”l) and his family, but it does not have to be too late for the next young family - nobody should lose their entire world due to unsafe streets and politicians who prioritize drivers over pedestrians and cyclists. My road bike still sits in the basement of my previous apartment complex in Jersey City. I stopped cycling altogether during COVID due to the amount of unsafe drivers piling up on the road —and left it behind. I hope there’s a day when families (including my own) will be able to feel safe out on the streets of Hudson County, on foot and on bike.
Alex@CallMeGillette

Friends and Neighbors, After five incredible years in @JerseyCity, my wife Amanda and I have made the difficult decision to move on. This city has been our home, where we’ve built memories, married, spent way too much time indoors (over COVID), watched our family grow from two to three (yes, dogs do count), and connected with some truly wonderful people. However, recent challenges have compelled us to seek to write a new chapter elsewhere. I wanted to share our reasons publicly (many of which I have previously shared at council meetings)-- not out of bitterness that those in charge haven't done enough, but in the hopes that they might spark a conversation about the future of this city that we still care about deeply. Rising Rents vs. Quality of Life: The Community We Lost When we first moved to Jersey City, we were drawn by its promise of a vibrant, diverse, and tightly-knit community. However, over the past few years, we’ve seen a troubling trend: rents have soared, but the quality of life has not kept pace. It feels as though the city has become a revolving door, with people constantly coming and going, unable to put down roots because of the ever-increasing cost of living and poor access to critical infrastructure. This transience has eroded the sense of community that once made Jersey City special. Neighbors who once greeted each other with familiarity have moved away, replaced by new faces who, too, are just passing through. We no longer see the same friendly gatherings in the park or the familiar faces at local restaurants. Instead, the city feels more like a temporary stopover than a place to truly call home - areas that should be quiet and safe for children are filled with loud music, trash and public drug/alcohol use. Rising rents, coupled with the lack of long-term commitment from many residents, have chipped away at the sense of belonging that initially drew us here. Furthermore, the poor quality of public transit options (looking at you @PATHTrain) has left us stuck and unable to reliably traverse the mile across Hudson River on the weekends without an automobile. With traffic as bad as it is, and only getting worse, we decided to trade in the beeping cars for tweeting birds. The widening of the turnpike will only serve to increase the noise and smog pollution that is choking our community, and financially choke PATH as people make the move to automobiles. Hopefully we get a governor that understands the importance of mass transit via rail, and can think outside the box for innovative solutions for lower Hudson to reach lower Manhattan - bike / pedestrian only tunnel anyone? Unsafe Streets: The Everyday Risks We Can No Longer Accept Another significant factor in our decision is the deteriorating safety on the streets. As a young couple starting a family, nothing is more important to us than the well-being of our future children. Unfortunately, the streets of Jersey City have become increasingly unsafe for pedestrians, especially for families with young children. A child was run over at the same intersection where a drunk driver rammed into Taqueria - neither of which drew any conclusion. The surge in un-cited traffic violations, particularly by cars and e-bikes, has made walking around our neighborhood a constant source of anxiety and uneasiness. What’s most disheartening is the apparent ineptitude of the local police department when it comes to response times and enforcing local traffic laws. Despite numerous complaints from residents, there seems to be little to no effort to crack down on reckless driving or to ensure that our streets are safe for everyone - and no accountability from the top. In addition to this, there’s a clear gap in services provided by JCPD. Long wait times for 911 calls still persist, and you cannot depend on the quality of service from the police when they arrive. As taxes increase, public services remain despairingly subpar. The lack of enforcement has led to a dangerous environment where crossing the street, taking a walk, or even being on Newark Ave has become a risky endeavor. We can no longer justify staying in a place where we feel that our safety concerns are not being addressed by those in charge. Looking Forward Our decision to leave Jersey City was not made lightly. We have cherished our time here, and it is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye. We hope that by sharing our reasons, we can contribute to a larger conversation about the future of this city. Jersey City still has so much potential, but it needs to address these prevailing and pressing issues if it is to retain the families and communities that make it vibrant and unique. To our friends and neighbors who remain, we wish you all the best. We hope that Jersey City can once again become the welcoming, safe, and close-knit community that we all want it to be. Sincerely, The Gillettes

Stop deflecting. Stop blaming process. Words without action is hypocrisy. You control the roads. You spend the $$$. You can move public opinion. I’m here to hold accountable any (and pretty much all) JC pols who send condolences but have a track record of inaction. 🧵

Let's be clear. The Turnpike Authority's plan is not a safety project. It *doubles* the number of lanes to 8 with two bridges for $6.7B. Repair was the NJTA's own proposal, just $260M for 40-years of life. Mayor @StevenFulop is right – repair not expand. newjerseyglobe.com/governor/fulop…

NJ has so much govt (500+ municipalities and even more schools districts). Tackling this problem is key to affordability and moving NJ forward. A governor that knows how municipal govt works is a key part to any solution bc the unfunded mandates from Trenton are a core issue. We have had 20 years of governors with no municipal experience it’s part of the reason that costs in this state are so high. It’s time to do something different

.@GovKathyHochul — the federal government and @POTUS are putting New York on notice. Your refusal to end cordon pricing and your open disrespect towards the federal government is unacceptable. Just as your high tolls and no free road option are a slap in the face to hard working Americans, your refusal to approve two vital pipelines that will lower fuel costs by 50% are against the public’s best interests. Your unlawful pricing scheme charges working-class citizens to use roads their federal tax dollars already paid to build. We will provide New York with a 30-day extension as discussions continue. Know that the billions of dollars the federal government sends to New York are not a blank check. Continued noncompliance will not be taken lightly.

Let's prioritize safety and efficiency on Jersey City streets by supporting the implementation of a protected bike lane in Jersey City Heights. It's essential to make our roads safer for both cyclists and drivers while maximizing the use of available grants. Together, we can create a more sustainable safer and inclusive city for all. That is why it is important for the council to move forward and approve the engineering design contract because we can't afford to forfeit $500,000

Protected bike lanes are a proven way through Vision Zero to create safer streets for all users, and we should strive to create them wherever it is practically possible. I strongly support a permanent PBL on Manhattan Ave and Franklin Street in the Heights, a corridor which has seen 11 crashes in 5 years - data that speaks for itself - and am hopeful this project will move forward without further delays.

1/♾️ LOTS of people in the Heights want the piloted, paid-for, protected bike lane on Manhattan Ave. and Franklin St. We’ll show you more of them every day! 3rd pic is the sign they’re all holding. Please tell city leaders you want it too, right here: actionnetwork.org/letters/save-t…
