@Mike_Erickson93 @internpierre There's more to aerospace than defense contractors Airbus > Boeing and it's not even close for commercial aircraft. Also, claiming that Lockheed "blow EU aerospace" is just ignorant. The Rafale routinely smokes Lockheed planes in wargames

The WSJ wants to know "what happens when Europeans find out how poor they are." I'm a European running a family office / living in Monaco. Let me run the numbers for Joseph Sternberg. Spoiler: per-capita GDP is the most misleading stat in this entire debate.🧵

@mattyglesias As long as the Trump Administration and the GOP are saying the solution to Americans’ affordability struggles is to build a $400 million (and rising) ballroom where Trump can host his rich donors for dinner, I don’t think Dems lhave to worry about “structural issues” .02

Trump has clearly bought into the idea that Iran had only 13 days worth of storage when the blockade was imposed; and that on 28 April it will run out of space and will be forced to curtail output. Even if that were true (which it likely isn't), NIOC has enough experience to shut in production without a catastrophic loss of pressure.
Aaron Rupar@atrupar

Trump: "What happens is that line explodes from within. Both mechanically and in the earth, something happens where it just explodes and they say they only have about 3 days left before that happens. And when it explodes, you can never rebuild it the way it is. It's a very powerful thing that takes place sort of having to do with nature."

@SandyofCthulhu @Clint_Davey1 No way. Abolitionists were way too popular in Northern England. The British knew they wouldn't be able to sustain a serious war against the North without massive domestic political repression there was no appetite for.

I have actually read the book written by the British attache at Gettysburg. It was published in late 1864 or early 1865. It has powerful arguments for why the South will win. So yeah … the guy was a fool. They had a chance to intervene up till the Emancipation Proclamation I think.

@ussalEN @timurkuran I don't think that's really supported by modern evidence. The important element for creating a viable financial and commercial hub is a reliable and consistent legal system. Extraterritoriality is so unpopular and unfair it's not actually reliable in the modern era.

Istanbul’s busiest airport (IST) has 5 operational runways and a 6th is under construction. It handled 85M passengers in 2025. In that same year, Dubai (DXB), Abu Dhabi (AUH), and Doha (DOH) had a combined total of 192M passengers. Plans are under way to increase IST’s share of the transit air traffic in the region. Like the tax exemption for wealthy foreigners, the broader goal is to restore Istanbul as the Eastern Mediterranean’s leading commercial and financial hub — a status it held for 1,500 years, first under Roman and Byzantine rule, then under the Ottomans.

An American man is rightfully bewildered by a small gathering of Iranian Monarchists celebrating the bombardment of Iran. "You want to kill your own people?? You're fucking sick!!" The monarchists call him a "piece of shit" and a "coward." (??) The American man's reaction is not only normal but honorable. It is not normal to want your own country to be bombed while you live in the safety of Maryland or Los Angeles, nor, for that matter, to celebrate and dance to images of school girls being blown to pieces by an American Tomahawk missile. It is sick and dishonorable. Nor should any American accept it as normal for vengeful and traumatized Diasporas to treat the US military as a mercenary army that they can deploy at their behest to settle personal scores. All Americans should share the anger and disgust this man exhibits.

Our bitter rival at Ensemble Studios. We had JUST released Age of Empires and then StarCraft comes out. All the cute girls at the club hung out at StarCraft’s table. We only got the nerdy ones. We punched back in 2002 with Age of Mythology which carried StarCraft’s asymmetry even further. Then in 2005 we did Age of Empires 3 which was the best graphics anyone had seen in an RTS game to date. And, again, lots of asymmetry. StarCraft always stayed the cool jock though. While we were the smart kid with taped glasses and a pocket protector over in the corner of the cafeteria.

There is a parallel to this in Japan when the USA dropped nuclear bombs. It was a terrible tragedy and violated all laws/norma whatever one might choose to call it. It did however lead to the complete surrender by Japan. The Iranian regime has proven a complete disregard for their own people and appear to be willing to destroy Iran and the Gulf economy rather than surrender. The USA could if necessary take out all 50 power plants in one day given the complete air dominance. Iran cannot meaningfully hit any target in the Gulf leave alone Israel. We can only hope and pray this does not happen and the regime in Iran surrenders. The alternative is too horrible to contemplate.

In a discussion with @michaeljswalker on Friday, I said that Trump was being presented options to strike civilian infrastructure in Iran. The aim would be to cripple Iran’s economy and to make it harder for Iran to persist in the war. I explained that hitting Iran’s critical infrastructure might shorten the war, but it would also intensify it. For that reason, that overall damage done to region and the global economy could end up being far worse during a shorter war. If Trump hits a major power plant, Iran will respond by hitting utilities in the Gulf states and Israel—including power plants and desalination facilities—and will count on the fact that it has to hit fewer targets to have a bigger impact. Iran has nearly 500 power plants, Israel has around 50. The largest Iranian plant, the Damavand Combined Cycle plant, accounts for about 4% of Iran’s total capacity. Israel’s largest plant, Orot Rabin, accounts for 20% of electricity production. The fact that a US president is posting a message like this on social media represents a total breakdown in the systems that are meant to ensure the US fights wars intelligently and judiciously. The commander in chief is not of sound mind, no one in his cabinet is willing to admit it, and we are being pushed towards the edge of an abyss.

Here are ten battles in which I believe the bad guys won, and it led to ill consequences: 1) Ain Jalut - Mongols defeated by Mamelukes. The Mongols had so much freedom of religion that their general was a Christian. He asked the Crusader states to help out, but they didn't to their everlasting shame. He might have won otherwise. 2) Poltava - Swedes defeated by Peter the Great. If the Swedes had won, they would have controlled the Baltic. While Charles XII himself wasn't a "good guy" Sweden has been benign, as opposed to Russia, which has been 90% a force of darkness in the world. 3) Manzikert. Look it up. 1/3

The fact is that except for a brief period of success among inner-city blacks in the 70s, Islam has done poorly as an evangelical sect of late. Almost no one wants to join it. Without the twin threats of Jizya and potential massacre, Islam can’t convert. Yes I know white Americans who have joined Islam. They are few compared to those who have joined Wicca or Buddhism. Or even Ba’hai.

This part of the Matt Murray email to WaPo staffers makes me most depressed about the paper's future. What you've got here is a media company where the owner has not only overhauled strategy but also required that new leadership pursue a Bad Strategy and demonize the very thing that recently made them successful. WP's recent golden age coincided with the paper projecting a clear stance against White House overreach. Even a far-right conservative can see that the "democracy dies in darkness" years saw a boom in subscriptions, as liberal readers patronized a news organization that was fiercely reporting on and standing up to an unpopular president. Current leadership wants to not only abandon that position but also demonize the idea that such a stand is journalistically or financially suitable. This makes no business sense. It's like a bizarro perestroika; except rather than the Soviet Union rejecting failed communism for political reasons, it's Bezos rejecting a successful business model for personal/political reasons. WaPo has made many, many strategic errors in the last few years—letting Politico walk out the door, failing to build a Politico Pro model, failing to build its own Punchbowl business, failing to build a big events biz, letting Ezra walk, over-hiring as subs declined, failing to copy the NYT's evolution toward becoming a lifestyle brand with games and cooking, etc—but what makes me most pessimistic about its near future is that Bezos has apparently made it mandatory that current leadership abolish all memory of the newspaper's recent triumphs and install a new strategy with no track record of success.

What would actually happen is Zohran scares all the rich people out of NYC, and after his plans fail progressives will blame it on the rich for not staying in the city to support it, thus allowing leftists to continue living in their delusions.

It’s very obvious that Zohran should win. Either his policies do well and New York prospers, which is good for Democrats. Or he destroys New York, which will make the annoying leftists finally shut up. Either way, a win.
