I wrote something for those who are unsure about nuclear technology. For people who have genuine concern regarding waste and safety - I hope to alleviate these worries by providing some well needed context in this opinion piece in the Star. #nuclear thestar.com/opinion/contri…

George Westinghouse would marvel at the incredible advances in nuclear technology that our namesake company has made over the last 75 years. About half of all the world’s nuclear power plants are based on Westinghouse nuclear technology.  Last week, “Bricks George” unveiled our advanced modular AP1000® PWR bricks set. You can see his bricks engineering buddy working below on a new AP1000 unit, just like the ones we are deploying across the world.  Now, we're giving away five Westinghouse bricks sets to people who reshare this post. We'll draw names on Monday from everyone who reposted! You can build a mini-Westinghouse nuclear reactor at home!

I would pay upwards of 300$ a month for an AI chess coach, an IM coach costs about 50$ and hour, but an on demand coach at that same level, is easily worth so much more. Why is AI so bad at Chess?

Start with a hypothetical 100% nuclear powered grid and ask yourself how you would improve it. What would you do to lower costs? How would you improve reliability?

Too many people are far too blasé about the risk of irradiating soil near reactors. What makes dirt/dust so particularly dangerous is that it can get picked up in the wind and breathed into human lungs, where it becomes massively more impactful.

@clawrence Fine, but they consume more power than they generate, whereas conventional power plants don’t - so there are differentiations which make them unique, and likely why many people are uncomfortable grouping them together

Sigh.. I guess I need to say this again. Batteries are power plants. Their fuel is electricity.

JUST IN: President Biden admits that the 'Inflation Reduction Act' was not actually about inflation after he started ranting without the teleprompter. Holy sh*t. Biden said the Inflation Reduction Act was actually about funding Climate Change efforts and said the Act should have actually been named something different. "Through my investments, the most significant climate change law ever. And by the way, it is a $369 billion bill." "It's called the [Inflation Reduction Act]. We should have named it what it was."

@miketor63 Should be doing solar too, not sure why Ontario only seems to build wind when it comes to renewables

Look, this is better than tearing up renewables contracts. However it is saying no by saying yes slowly. 5 GW planned by 2034 is comical. Pakistan added 13GW in 6mths on rooftops largely. Their GDP is less than 1/2of ON's. cbc.ca/news/canada/to…

Someday some reporter will figure out how to explain to the American public how post-Covid inflation was a worldwide phenomenon caused by pent-up demand and that the Biden/Harris administration handled it better than every other country.

NEW: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. apologizes after footage was released of his conversation with Donald Trump. In the footage, Trump described how the bullet felt ripping through his ear and talked about his call with Biden. “I just turned my head to show the chart And something wrapped me, it, it felt like the world's largest mosquito.” “And it was, it was a bullet going around, you know… That was a big gun. Those are pretty tough guns.” RFK has since apologized for the footage’s release. “When President Trump called me I was taping with an in-house videographer. I should have ordered the videographer to stop recording immediately. I am mortified that this was posted. I apologize to the president.”

MCR for Pickering B will definitely include FC replacement, as Pickering will benefit from the new alloy and be able to get probably 50 years out of the new ones (vs ~40 years for the old ones). The argument we are making is that OPG shouldn't completely shutdown Pickering B for the MCR in 2026. There's enough life left in the PT's that if we extend the EFPH to 305,000 that they can do a "rolling refurb" like they are doing at Darlington and Bruce, so the plant is never completely offline. Does that answer your question?

Pressure tubes: the heart of the CANDU When I attended and presented at the @CNSC_CCSN hearing for the Pickering extension along with @TomHess_ and @jules_besseling, the main topic of discussion was pressure tubes. Were they fit for continued operation? @opg of course argued yes, opponents argued no. Isn't this easy to determine? Let's explore 👇

@cadlam Right so what I’m trying to get at is, does the argument in this thread for PTs also include CT, which it would need to. But it sounds like it does! So, there is a chance that FC replacement may not be part of the MCR scope (if CNSC approves)?

CT and PT are replaced together. Bruce Power has developed a special machine that removes them in one go now, greatly reducing the time it takes to swap them. Yes, total fuel channel replacement, new boilers, deep water inlet upgrade...etc There's a considerable scope to the Pickering B refurbishment.
