I saw this 15 years ago as a lawyer for a band in northern BC. A Chinese coal company rep handed a band official $20,000 in cash in an unmarked envelope. But that official wasn’t crooked and the band opposed the mine. We took pictures of the cash, gave it back, and took the company to court. The judge shrugged. Company got its permits. By giving tribal leaders a veto over major resource projects, bribery in one form or another is now the ordinary course of business, even if it’s no longer cash in envelopes. Now, it’s billion dollar payouts. This is how reconciliation despite its lofty goals and some well meaning individuals working for indigenous groups, has rapidly corrupted our economy, and will soon transform British Columbia into the third world.

Mono-culture farming devastates the rest of nature. Farmlands continue to lose much of their wildlife, bees, birds, insects, amphibians. But each generation measures "normal" nature against what existed in their childhood; not what existed before. So we don't mourn the Auroch, Quagga, Eastern Elk, or drained wetland. We never knew them. We each inherit a slightly emptier world & call it normal, a shifting baseline syndrome. Humans are remarkably adaptive... dangerously so.

A Cork Safety Alerts follower has reported spotting Hemlock Water Dropwort washed up on Front Strand beach in Youghal yesterday, Wednesday 18 March. A previous sighting was also reported at Mall beach in the town. This is one of Europe’s most toxic plants. Do not touch it and keep children and pets well away. If you or your pet have had any contact with it, seek medical or veterinary attention immediately.
