If it doesn't rain for the rest of the year, Asheville Regional Airport will still be in one of the top 10 wettest years on record (currently at about 59" or 9th place) #NCwx

Five years ago today, #HurricaneMichael made landfall near Mexico Beach FL at Category 5 intensity, generating a devastating 15.6-foot storm surge there. It's only 1 of 4 Category 5 hurricane landfalls in the US. This and other radar loops are available at #michael18" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">bmcnoldy.earth.miami.edu/tropics/radar/…

@imjacobnotjames We've been experimenting with this a bit at work. (I'm on the programming/development/systems side of the Midwestern Regional Climate Center.) Similar experiences over here!

The quarterlies are IN ✅Lots to read up on after a summer of records. We've got it all (including the Great Lakes report) right here: mrcc.purdue.edu/climatesummari…
NOAA NCEI@NOAANCEI

@MidwestClimate: Summer temperatures were near normal for most of the Midwest, with slightly above-normal temperatures in the west and slightly below-normal temperatures in the east. Summer precipitation was 84% of normal for the Midwest. ncei.noaa.gov/news/september…

@jjrennie Cool maps! Question: do you mean the number of times the daily max/min T exceeded the 98th percentile of *all* max/min temperature values in the POR regardless of day, or do you mean the number of times the daily max/min T exceeded a particular day's 98th percentile value?

Number of days in the US were temperatures in 2023 exceeded their 98th percentile. Both daytime highs and overnight lows are shown. #StateOfClimate

Wow....did not realize how rare this is. Only 4 previous days where the minimum temperature did not drop below 80 degrees. @NWSTallahassee

@SteveSeman I was out there over the weekend for a vacation, and I was thinking to myself that I've never seen it look so dry there at this time of year. Guess I was on to something.

@HoarFrost_ Yep, there's no doubt the list of longest streaks is dominated by fall and winter. There is one 43 day streak that spilled into early May (so it would have started in March). Very unusual at this time of year.

A (very) quick shower yesterday in #StateCollege dropped 0.05" of rain, which snapped our streak of days w/o measurable rain at 16 (longest since 5/2021) But, we're now up to 33 straight days w/o a decent rain (at least 0.10"). Longest stretch since 12/1985 - 1/1986 #pawx #ctpwx

Anyone heard of or currently call Lake Okeechobee "Lake O?" Is this a new thing or not a thing at all? I'm born and raised in S FL and have never heard this, but just did today. #curious

@skydrama Got 11 pepper plants in a small plot on the west side of my apartment building. Should do pretty well, but it certainly looks like I will be hauling a lot of water to them in the near term.

Didn’t go too crazy with the pepper garden this year but it continues to grow. Nice collection of red habanero, jalapeño, Tabasco, and bell peppers should keep me busy come harvest time. Got a little row of sweet lunchbox peppers for the kiddo growing too.

@FLClimateCenter Meteorology/atmospheric science is arguably a niche major. Wonder how DeSantis would feel about that in relation to, you know, hurricane forecasting and preparation.
