Joe Simpson was a Prison Officer through and through, a man totally committed to the Prison Officers' Association, the trade union movement and advancing the cause of the working class from which he came. Joe started his career at Manchester Strangeways and went on to Holme House Prison in Stockton on Tees and Northallerton becoming a POA activist and union official. His work on behalf of members, extensive knowledge and communications skills saw him rise through the ranks to the post of Deputy General Secretary of the union. Joe unflinchingly stood up for what he believed in and when he spoke people listened. Joe was loved by his friends, respected by his ‘enemies’ and admired by all those who want a better world. Such was Joe's standing amongst Prison Officer colleagues that yesterday Joe's partner Emma, family friends and colleagues gathered in Leeds for a ceremony to rename the union's northern regional office "Joe Simpson House".
