Today on March 20, House Subcommittee on Middle East, North Africa & Central Asia faces one of the most interesting challenge a US House subcommittee has ever faced. Will it be able to stand for democracy in Pakistan, 5th largest Nation State or will allow itself to be fooled by the sophistry employed by Mr. Donald Lu, Asst Secretary of State who has clearly submitted a misleading testimony created to confuse & bamboozle the Honourable Members of the Congress?
Mr. Donald Lu is trying to sell a Cinderella story on Pakistan, that is more suitable for the children section of Barnes & Noble than the records of House Foreign Affairs Committee of the United States Congress.
Mr. Lu starts by referring to 31 years ago when he was a junior officer in Pakistan and witnessed 1993 Elections. Cleverly he has tried injecting the idea, into the minds of Congressmen, that elections in Pakistan are always flawed, with some irregularities here and there. With sophistry that would cringe the like of Protagoras, he weaves a romantic story of democratic progress in Pakistan. Yes, there were some tiny weeny problems, like undue restrictions on freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly, restrictions on internet & telecommunications, harassment of female journalists and so on. He creates bullet points by cherry picking facts that suited his Cinderella story without giving the bigger picture to the House Subcommittee that was his responsibility.
While cherry picking, he off-course wants the Congressmen to forget that the former Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Pakistan are in jail in connection with a Cipher from Washington in which he appears as the main character. However two years have passed since March 2022, and what happened in Pakistan in these past 24 months (in which country lost all what it had achieved in its gradual democratic progress since 1980 martial law) and how State Dept, defender of the Liberal World Order, under Mr. Lu responded to those developments, is far more important. Mr Lu’s Cinderella story fails to mention what happened in the months leading to elections. How thousands of people were arrested, hundreds including young & women were beaten & dragged on roads, military courts instituted to try civilian protesters, courts were rendered dysfunctional, orders of Supreme Court defied, Judges of Supreme Court forced to resign, prominent journalists murdered, made to disappear or forced to live in exile, media were thus gagged like never before and Twitter/X, Pakistan’s main information highway to the world is mysteriously blocked to stop debate on Lu’s romantic elections. True! that Lu mentions internet restrictions, but in a way that hides the fact that when main opposition (PTI) was ruthlessly denied right of assembly in physical world and they resorted to virtual meetings then internet was shut for hours. And Lu mentions all the restrictions in a manner that suggests as if these were uniformly applied not letting the Congress to understand that all these restrictions were targeted specifically towards one party, PTI - the main opposition. Lu hides the real facts that in the week before elections, Imran Khan was awarded 31 years in jail, PTI symbol was taken away forcing party to fight elections with 750 symbols & internet was blocked on election day so that voters of PTI can’t locate the right polling stations. And when despite all these gargantuan problems people still managed to vote, military barged in with guns & changed results.
Test for Congress today is that Pakistan (Pop: 240m) is 5th largest nation state, & if Congress fails to stand for democracy there then all talk of Venezuela, Belarus & others will look empty rhetoric! Will Congressmen be able to see through Lu’s sophistry remains to be seen @HouseForeign @RepMcCaul @RepGregoryMeeks @RepJoeWilson @RepDeanPhillips @RepBrianMast @RepTimBurchett @RepRonnyJackson @RepJimBaird @RepMikeLawler @RepMcCormick @RoKhanna @RepCasar
