The India–UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) will enter into force on 15th July 2026, marking a new phase in India’s economic diplomacy. On Day 3 of the 137th Session of the IMO Council, London, the Indian delegation met the High Commissioner of India to the UK, discussing critical issues impacting Indian seafarers and India's maritime standing globally. The discussions included deliberations on the detention and criminalisation of the Master of MV Smyrtos, the posting of a DDG-rank official from the Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) at IMO as a technical domain representative, the appointment and sponsorship of SPOs and JPOs at IMO, the sponsorship of the C.P. On Day 4 of the 137th Session of the IMO Council, London, the Indian Delegation made an intervention on the situation in West Asia, welcoming the understanding reached among all parties towards ending the conflict and expressing hope that it continues to hold despite recent escalation of tensions in the region. The delegation highlighted the serious economic disruption caused by the conflict, including the loss of lives of seafarers. India emphasized the importance of restoring peace and stability in the region to ensure free, safe, and unimpeded navigation, trade, and commerce through the Strait of Hormuz. India reaffirmed its consistent position that all issues must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. PM @narendramodi held productive talks with PM @AlboMP in Melbourne. The two leaders reviewed the strong progress in the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and agreed to deepen efforts towards the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) to further boost trade and investment. The discussions also covered cooperation in critical minerals, renewable energy, nuclear energy, technology, education, climate action, defence and shipbuilding.
