In 1965 filmmaker Stanley Kubrick was in mid-production on 2001: A Space Odyssey with Arthur C. Clarke. At the time, he feared the Mariner 4 Probe mission might discover intelligent alien life, instantly spoiling his film’s premise of humanity’s first cosmic encounter.
