There is a common tendency among certain liberal environmental perspectives to portray environmental destruction in the so called Global South as the result of individual moral or intellectual failure, as if people are degrading their surroundings simply out of ignorance or greed. This interpretation overlooks a far more complex and material reality. In truth, most people living in these conditions are deeply aware of their reliance on local ecosystems and have a clear understanding of the damage caused by practices like deforestation or soil erosion. However, their actions are not driven by carelessness but by necessity. The conditions of extreme poverty imposed and maintained through imperialist economic structures leave them with few or no alternatives for survival. In such a context, exploiting natural resources becomes one of the only available means to secure food and income, even if it comes at a long term cost. The charcoal trade around Lichinga in Niassa Province Mozambique during the 2000s serves as a concrete example of this dynamic, where individuals engaged in cutting trees not out of disregard for the environment but because it was one of the only ways to sustain themselves and their families on a daily basis : "The charcoal vendors also complain.
