Earlier this week, @instwolnosci hosted a closed-door discussion under the Chatham House Rule with Sweden’s Ambassador to Poland @martinaquick. Her point was straightforward: looking at the geography of the Baltic region, it is difficult to imagine that Poland and Sweden would not work closely together on security, energy, and the future of Europe. That idea returned repeatedly throughout the evening. The discussion touched on Russia’s hybrid activities, the future of transatlantic relations, strategic autonomy, military cooperation in the Baltic region, and emerging formats of cooperation between the Nordic countries and Central & Eastern Europe. One of the most interesting undercurrents of the conversation was how European countries are increasingly trying to reconcile two realities at once: the continued importance of the American security umbrella and the growing expectation that Europe must become more strategically capable on its own. Thank you to all participants for an excellent and candid exchange. @AmbSzweWarszawa
