REMEMBERING KUKI ATROCITIES AGAINST PAITE. The 1997–1998 Kuki–Paite (Kuki–Zomi) conflict in Churachandpur, Manipur began after KNF (Kuki National Front) militants purposedly massacred around 9–10 Paite civilians at Saikul on 24 June 1997, an incident widely seen as the trigger of the violence. The conflict later spread across Churachandpur and nearby areas, involving retaliatory attacks from both sides, burning of villages, killings, and mass displacement. The violence was rooted in ethnic and political hegemony of Kuki group, military hegemony, and Kuki hegemony over identity and influences in the district. Despite Army deployment and peace talks in July 1997, clashes continued through 1998, destroying more than 50 Paite villages. According to official estimates, around 352 people Paites were killed, 4,670 houses destroyed, and over 13,000 displaced before peace efforts by Kuki Inpi Manipur and the Zomi Council helped end the conflict in late 1998.
