Yesterday, our @NiskanenCenter team, in partnership with the @ProbSolveCaucus, held our first Housing/Transportation event on Capitol Hill for Congressional staff. The event titled “Surface Transportation Reauthorization: Aligning Transportation Dollars and Housing Supply” served as our new team’s official launch! The two part event held a fireside chat with Congressman @RepScottPeters (D-CA-50)—lead sponsor of the Build More Housing Near Transit Act—and Niskanen’s housing policy analyst, @AWJustus. The second part included an expert panel of some of our most brilliant transportation and housing minds who discussed the need to focus federal policy on the intersection between transportation dollars, housing supply, and economic and social opportunity! Our experts included: @rohanaras, @aarmlovi, @willpoffwebster, @CorriganSalerno, @ShroyerAaron, Tara Roche, and Jarrett Stolzfus! A sincere thank you to Congressman Scott Peters, President of the Niskanen Center RJ Lyman, the Problem Solvers Caucus, all of our panelists, partners and guest! Thank you all!

Thanks to the Build America & Problem Solvers Caucuses, & @NiskanenCenter's @KNGTheJD, for assembling a great transport-housing event in the Capitol I'm again impressed with @ScottPetersSD. What a treat to see elected officials handling technical detail with such care 👏

An interstate power line can take over a decade to permit — because approval rests with individual states, sometimes individual counties. Dr. Liza Reed testified before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee today on what Congress can do: ⚡Establish a narrow and clear federal authority to build interregional transmission ⚡Remove market barriers to advanced technologies like HVDC ⚡Enable competition so private developers can build without state monopoly protections blocking them A grid that grows the economy, provides affordable energy, and keeps American industry competitive. That's what's on the table. Read the full testimony: lnkd.in/evNPD6ki

NEW in The Abundant Future: The Senate just passed a housing bill that was originally focused on building more rather than a rehashing of the usual subsidy playbook. But at the last minute, it included a provision that could kill new construction – prioritizing a popular talking point over good policy. Our own @BailleeBrown on how the abundance movement should view this win, our frustration, and what comes next:

I don’t see any tension here. When properly understood, affordability is about reducing barriers that drive up the price of consumer goods and services. The proposed paid family leave program isn’t an affordability issue and neither is the payroll tax that would fund it.

Our Niskanen Center Healthcare team has been tracking and monitoring the latest developments in the No Surprises Act Independent Dispure Resolution (IDR) process data! What @lawsonhmansell found is last year alone providers won 88% of disputes, collecting 4x+ in-network rates. These costs are then passed onto employers and premiums at a time Americans are in need of lowered costs and increased access. With the 5 year implementation of the NSA quickly approaching, we implore Congress and the @HouseCommerce Committee to hold a formal 5 year anniversary hearing to assess current operational progress and reforms needed! niskanencenter.org/new-data-shows…
Lawson Mansell@lawsonhmansell

The ill-advised No Surprises Act IDR process created a cottage industry for folks like HaloMD to profit off of at the expense of patients, receiving over 9x in-network rates. This is exactly what @NiskanenCenter has been warning about. Congress needs to act, and we have ideas:

Department of Housing and Urban Development
Burdensome regulations add cost; both during construction and as a result of restricted housing supply. Per this Executive Order, HUD will seek to eliminate burdensome rules and reform programs that constrain residential development and housing affordability.
Scott Turner@SecretaryTurner

Since Day One, President Trump promised to make housing affordable and tear down burdensome regulations across the board. Today’s Executive Order takes the next big step towards both of those goals. HUD will eliminate regulatory red tape that stifles new housing supply and increases the costs homeownership.
