There are hundreds of Irish civilians in graves across Ireland & some in Britain put there by Provo paramilitaries whose atrocities & memory are celebrated by Sinn Fein & its fellow travellers most of whom deny that Ukraine & other states bordering Russia have any right to defend themselves or receive assistance in defending themselves against Russian invasion & aggression while spouting irrelevant homilies about neutrality.

There are hundreds of Irish civilians in graves across Ireland put there by the military & paramilitary forces of a founding member of NATO. No Irish civilians were placed into graves by the militaries of Russia or Iran or China who this NATO member is โ€œprotectingโ€ us from.

Murderous mercenary Costas Georgiouโ€™s life reads like a grim parable of post-imperial violence. Born in 1951 in Cyprus, then still a British protectorate, his family relocated to London in the early 1960s. He enlisted in the British Army and joined the 1st Battalion, Parachute Regiment, a unit that would earn lasting infamy in Northern Ireland. Georgiou stood out as an exceptional marksman. On the 30th of January 1972, Bloody Sunday, British paratroopers opened fire on unarmed civilians during a civil rights march in Derry, killing 14 and wounding many more. It is here that Georgiouโ€™s name enters a murky historical record. Eyewitness Noel Kelly claimed that Georgiou, along with another soldier named Nick Hall, actually threw stones at marchers before the shooting began in a provocation to escalate tensions. Other reports allege that Georgiou fired at least 26 rounds into the crowd which was exceptional even in such an atrocity. The Saville Inquiry (1998โ€“2010), which overturned the earlier Widgery Tribunal, concluded that the shootings were โ€œunjustifiedโ€, but it did not publicly name Georgiou. Instead, soldiers were anonymised under ciphers like โ€œSoldier Fโ€ and โ€œSoldier G.โ€ Only Soldier F has since faced prosecution, though his trial has stalled. In official terms, Georgiouโ€™s direct role remains unproven. Later that same year, after the dispicable events of Bloody Sunday massacre, Costas Georgiou continued to distinguish himself in the notorious Parachute Regiment by being involved in the armed robbery of a post office in Ulster. Court-martialled (for the post office) and sentenced to five years in prison, Georgiouโ€™s military career ended in disgrace with a dishonourable discharge. Again, the British army only viewed the post office as a crime, not the shooting and slaughter of civilians part. After prison, Georgiou found himself adrift. The mid-1970s offered a profitable outlet for disgraced soldiers, the booming market in Cold War mercenaries. The facinating moral mirage of Soldier of Fortune (think Temu for Mercs) was founded in 1975, and that same year Georgiou was recruited by the FNLA (National Liberation Front of Angola) to fight Soviet-backed MPLA and Cuban forces in Angolaโ€™s civil war. Adopting the nom de guerre โ€œColonel Callanโ€, lifted from an anti-hero on a short running British tv show at the time. Georgiou surrounded himself with fellow paratroopers and adventurers. His inner circle included a rogues gallery including Mick Wainhouse, another ex-paratrooper dishonourably discharged for the post office robbery. Nick Hall, implicated in Derry, who helped recruit more mercenaries and Andrew McKenzie and John Derek Barker, British mercenaries later executed with him. At first, Georgious hapless unit managed some successes in ambushes that killed scores of MPLA and Cuban fighters. But his leadership developed a reputation for sadistic brutality, ordering executions of deserters, torturing prisoners, and even massacring allied FNLA troops โ€œfor fun.โ€ His paranoia grew until he fired his whole team, as in he shot 14 of his own mercenaries in cold blood. By early 1976, Georgious reign of terror was collapsing, assumably due to HR issues filling positions left empty by him killing his employees. Captured by Cuban-MPLA forces, he stood trial in Luanda alongside other mercenaries. The proceedings became a Cold War show trial only he actually was guilty. Georgiou admitted he had led โ€œan organised group on the fringe of the law.โ€ Convicted of war crimes, including the murders of two Angolan civilians and his own men, he was executed by firing squad on the 10th of July 1976. New: It's been revealed that, six months on from a promise to provide ยฃ70m of new funding to help increase youth participation in the Cadet Forces, the MOD is yet to part with any money. It also said it would appoint a National Cadet Champion, but the search for a candidate is still in the initial stages. A senior figure warned that this "inertia" risked undermining the MOD's renewed commitments to orgs like the Army Cadet Force.
