Of all the bad ideas floated by this Administration, this one ranks. It has got to be real; Mullin wouldn't waste time like this unless it is a serious distraction plan. Planes don't divert to other airports. The flights will be cancelled, disrupting blue and red voters, impacting the airlines, and having no impact on immigration policy. They are going to do it.

My argument fifteen years ago was that whenever Republicans next obtained power they would pass a regressive, deficit-increasing tax cut (which is what they did in 2017 and again in 2025) so preemptive fiscal consolidation would fail.

As someone who was a budget hawk fifteen years ago, I would gently suggest that the case for freaking out about the deficit back then was that this was where we were going to end up.
