#DetransAwarenessDay We haven’t talked enough about the challenges facing detransitioners Tomorrow 70 detransitioners will be at Genspect’s Detransition Awareness Day event “Life Beyond Transition”. One of the few long-term outcome studies, Dhejne et al. (2011), examined the outcomes of "sex reassignment surgery" for 324 individuals in Sweden from 1973 to 2003. The study showed that individuals who underwent surgery had significantly worse outcomes, including nearly 3 times higher psychiatric hospitalization rates, nearly 5 times more suicide attempts, and a suicide rate over 19 times higher than matched controls. Life beyond transition can be extremely difficult, yet this reality is often minimised, leaving those affected without adequate support. journals.plos.org/plosone/articl… genspect.org/detrans-awaren…

📢NHS England just published 10 new systematic evidence reviews on PB and CSH for binary and “non-binary” youth. Because of the weak evidence, the NHS paused new cross-sex hormones prescriptions and is conducting a 90-day consultation to review evidence for a potential permanent ban. /1

Finally. Cross-sex hormones to be banned by NHS England for under 18's. Big news. CSH should have been reviewed at the same time as puberty blockers in 2022. These hormones should never have been given to children. Now for the private providers. dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1…

On Fox Varian, by @HadleyFreeman in @thetimes 'This is big because while nothing else - common sense, science, politicians, even public opinion - could stop the gender gravy train among American liberal institutions, money is a language all Americans understand. And money is why gender ideology spread like Japanese knotweed across the US. It was boom time for grifters and monsters' Great column. Journalists who are shocked at the Fox Varian outcome - take a look back at the number of times you ignored the story. Those who paid attention saw it coming with a telescope. thetimes.com/comment/column…

Thousands of U.S. parents have consented to having surgeons remove their daughters' breasts after being assured that their daughters were at serious risk of suicide otherwise. Now, the incoming president of WPATH says mastectomy "in and of itself" doesn't prevent suicide.
Benjamin Ryan@benryanwriter

Dr. Loren Schechter, the head of gender-affirming surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and the president-elect of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), testified that gender-transition surgery is not form of suicide prevention. thefp.com/p/a-legal-firs…

A Legal First That Could Change Gender Medicine At 16, Fox Varian got a mastectomy while undergoing a gender transition. She sued her psychologist and plastic surgeon for leaving her ‘disfigured for life.’ Benjamin Ryan reports from the courtroom. Read the @TheFP article: thefp.com/p/a-legal-firs… Follow and support my Substack, where I cover pediatric gender medicine: benryan.substack.com. I was the only reporter to attend the entire three-week trial and will be providing more in-depth reporting and commentary on the case. The opening of my Free Press article: Fox Varian had a turbulent childhood. Her parents split when she was seven, triggering a three-year custody battle that ultimately saw her estranged from her father. She suffered from a constellation of mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, and social phobia. She was diagnosed with autism and bounced around various schools. Her first period sent her into a meltdown, and she battled disordered eating and body-image issues. By mid-adolescence, she was completely lost. At 15, she began questioning her gender during sessions with her psychologist. She changed her birth name, Isabella, to Gabriel, which she saw as androgynous. Over the next two months, she cut her hair short, began binding her breasts, switched her name again, to Rowan, and started telling people she was transgender. In December 2019, 11 months after she started this public social transition, Varian underwent surgery to remove her breasts. She was 16 years old. Varian, who adopted the name Fox at 18 and is now 22, is one of thousands of minors who underwent gender-transition surgery over the past decade. And she is just one of the young people who have come to regret permanently addressing what was only a temporary identity shift. Three years after her mastectomy, Varian stopped identifying as transgender and began a process known as detransitioning. In May 2023, she filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against the two principal Westchester County, New York, care providers who oversaw her gender transition: her long-time psychologist, Kenneth Einhorn, and Dr. Simon Chin, who performed the mastectomy. On Friday, a jury in White Plains, New York, awarded Varian $2 million in damages. Varian’s case is the first malpractice suit from a detransitioner to go before a jury, and I was the only reporter to attend the entire three-week trial. Represented by personal-injury attorney Adam Deutsch, Varian said she had been injured by the defendants due to their deviation from standard practices and a lack of informed consent. While there are no guarantees in medical malpractice lawsuits, legal experts believe Varian’s victory could inspire a wave of similar cases that would significantly disrupt pediatric gender medicine.

The recovered memory, multiple personality, and Satanic Panic juggernaut of malpractice was brought to an end by a tsunami of lawsuits. The first one was won in 1994, and by 1998 the atrocious scandal was over. Although for many of the victims, there was no end to the suffering. In medical scandals, the first malpractice win is pivotal. And in gender medicine, the dam just broke.

Thanks for the support and for calling out the problem @hoovlet I was unaware that the host invited callers to disagree with me...without me being allowed to respond! But that's what happens when you believe you have Absolute Truth: why listen to others? They're obviously wrong!
Carole Hooven@hoovlet

Outrageous treatment of @michaelshermer yesterday (Jan 28) on @BrianLehrer's podcast on @WNYC. Lehrer distorted Shermer's views and failed to treat him with respect, apparently because they disagreed about issues like whether sex is binary and the medical treatment of gender-dysphoric minors. Lehrer took some listener calls with Shermer on the line, then invited complaints after removing Shermer from the conversation, allowing callers to voice them on air without Shermer present to respond: Lehrer: “If you’ve been texting or starting to call in because you were offended and you want to tell your own experience or that of a trans person, you can call in.” In contrast, Shermer remained calm and measured throughout, stating his views clearly, clarifying areas of disagreement, and showing respect for the host. The relevant part of the transcript is in the next post. The full transcript and audio are available at the link below (trans discussion begins at 16:28, although Shermer mentions it at 4:44). youtube.com/watch?v=WUIgPz…

Adult_Human_Mother💜🤍💛🦕🦖🍳🦒@LydiamamaTerf

When I became a mom to a girl 18 years ago. I never imagined I’d have had to save my daughter from an ideology. The only way to truly be authentic is the removal of your sexual function and body parts. Transgenderism is rooted in homophobia. It is gay conversion. My daughter was socially transitioned in secret at her high school then without my consent. This happened when she was 14 at an age where adults insist students should have “privacy,” yet somehow parents are treated like we’re the problem. But I’m her mother. I was not a threat to my child. I’m the person who has loved her, protected her, and raised her, her entire life. And I didn’t find out because the school sat me down and spoke honestly. I found out because I saw her name had been changed by her biology teacher in 9th grade. A teacher whose job is literally to teach biological reality. That moment shattered something in me. Because it wasn’t just about a name. It was about an entire system deciding it could step in, redefine my child, and push her into an opposite-sex category while excluding me from the conversation. Let me say this clearly: Social transition is not neutral. It’s not “ kind.” It’s an adult decision that changes a child’s social world overnight name, pronouns, peer groups, school records and it can create pressure to “stay consistent” with the new identity, even when the child is unsure or distressed. They lock them in with no off-ramp. I tried to address it through the normal channels. I asked questions. I requested meetings. I tried to work cooperatively. The school principal and with the help of the assistant superintendent, Equity person, teachers and local teacher union president. Shut me out! I had to do what no parent should have to do just to protect their own kid. I hired a lawyer to stop the social transition. And here’s the part the adults thinking they are doing something great for the child don't want to hear. When the adults stopped, my daughter desisted. When the outside reinforcement stopped, the confusion settled. When the pressure stopped, she came back to herself. That is what reality looks like when a family is allowed to do what families are supposed to do: support a child through a hard season without permanently labeling her as something she isn’t. Some people assume that if you speak up, you must be “far right” a bigot. I am a lifelong liberal Democrat, and I’m a California native with deep roots. I love my state. California has always been known for tolerance, compassion, and live-and-let-live. But it has gone too far! With anti parent laws. Because tolerance should never mean lying to children, excluding parents, or erasing girls. In our society we also need to be honest about what this has become. This isn’t just a social movement. There are ideological roots here that deserve scrutiny including older attitudes that stigmatized homosexuality, pushed rigid gender stereotypes, and treated bodies like problems to be “fixed.” Today, it has become a pipeline that conveniently feeds a massive medical and pharmaceutical industry, where lifelong patients mean lifelong profit. I am one of the lucky ones who got my daughter back. It has crushed me. I am broken. I have compound trauma and trust issues. I have been shunned. Attacked. Even from the people who I love. Friends and family don't talk to me. I am a cyclone of despair, hope and triumph! Grief hangs over my life. I feel lost and found. Humbled to my core. In the chaos of fighting gender. I have also gained the most brilliant and amazing new friends. Out of difficult times comes silver linings. One thing that I never let go of. It was hope. But, some are not so lucky.

The decision by an EU country to grant refugee status to this Brazilian woman is significant for more than one reason. To begin with, it is the first of its kind (at least that we know of). It is also an acknowledgement that the threats and punishment imposed on women who assert their views on sex and gender can amount to persecution and that their lives could be in danger if forced to return to where they came from. Third, it acknowledges that the woman in question did not escape to avoid prosecution for an ordinary crime (as that would normally exclude you from refugee status). It is therefore reflects an understanding of the authorities in the European country of asylum that the charges and the risk of this excessive sentence are function as tools of persecution and not prosecution.

North Carolina's legislature just overrode a veto of a law that, among other worthy initiatives, extends the statue of limitation for medical malpractice claims for transgender procedures to ten years. Extending the statute of limitations to 25 years across the whole country would be the end of the gender medicalization industry. We know this because the law banning pediatric gender medicine in Missouri allowed the clinics to stay open for another year and continue treating children already having their puberty blocked or cross-sex hormones being administrated. But the clinics all shut down immediately because of another provision of the bill, extending liability for those who regret their transitions for 25 years. Though the clinicians claim they are helping people to become their authentic selves by dosing them with cross-sex hormones, they don't really believe it. If it were true, they would have no reason to fear future liability. But it's not true, they know it's not true, and they therefore shut down immediately rather than face that liability.
Prisha Mosley🦎@PrishaMosley

I’m so grateful to the NC legislature for the override the VETO of #HB805! My medical malpractice claims can now be reinstated! This change is HUGE and means that I can seek justice for the medical harm that came to me as a teenager in NC when I believed that I was trans.
