Bryan Johnson spent $2M a year, mass-testing every biomarker in his body, measuring nighttime erections, injecting his son's blood plasma, and getting gene therapy in Honduras. 30+ doctors. Hundreds of tests per year. Over 100 daily supplements. The thing leaching PFAS and heavy metals into his environment was 15 feet from his kitchen window the entire time. Artificial turf with crumb rubber infill contains 306 identified chemicals. A Yale study found 52 of them are classified as carcinogens by the EPA. The crumb rubber is made from recycled tires, which release polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phthalates, lead, zinc, and benzene. When it rains, those compounds leach into the surrounding soil and groundwater. On hot days, surface temperatures hit 170°F, accelerating the off-gassing into breathable air. PFAS, the compounds he specifically named, are called "forever chemicals" because they don't break down. They accumulate in your blood indefinitely. Mount Sinai's Children's Environmental Health Center has urged a national moratorium on new artificial turf installations. The EU has already moved to ban crumb rubber under their microplastics regulations. A 2025 Northeastern study found that as turf degrades in sunlight and heat, the chemicals multiply into 572+ distinct compounds. Johnson's protocol tracked his biological age across 70+ organs, measured his rate of aging down to a DunedinPACE score of 0.69, and optimized every minute of his sleep cycle to the nearest degree Fahrenheit. His home was converted into a $6.8M Blueprint clinic. And the backyard was quietly doing the opposite of everything happening inside. The fact that he caught it, said it publicly, and is ripping it out is the part worth paying attention to. Most people with artificial turf have no idea what's in it and aren't running the bloodwork to find out.

Guys, I’m an idiot. All this time I’ve spent trying not to die, I had toxic turf in my backyard. Artificial turf contains crumb rubber infill made from recycled tires, which leaches chemicals including PFAS, heavy metals, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These compounds are linked to hormone disruption, carcinogenicity, and systemic inflammation. I don’t know how I missed it. It makes me question my basic competence in life. What gets me is that I try so hard to survey the world of potential idiocy. Then I find out there’s a monument to idiocy sitting right in front of my face that I was blind to. I’m removing the turf, yet I’m still stuck with this seemingly unsolvable problem of how to not be an idiot.

It is 100% true that great men and women of the past were not sitting around moaning about their feelings. I regret nothing.

Monday is off with a bang: @pmarca ended therapy for founders, Banksy got unveiled (rather lame press move if you ask me; it was cooler for all w/the mystique intact; but I’m sure he’ll baffle us again soon)… & everyone is being diligent to get some morning light in their eyes.

The risk-reward ratio on candles is so bad. Upsides: Pleasant mood lighting that potentially smells nice. Downsides: Breathing in carbon monoxide, potentially losing your house and maybe dying a fiery death.

What did removing Saddam, Gaddafi, Assad get us? Chaos, civil war, genocide. The rule for regime change operations in the Middle East is that they don’t flip a country from bad-to-good. They flip a country from bad-to-worse.

HHS' current war on mRNA isn't the first time the US govt tried to kneecap a promising therapeutic platform I've been reading Merchants of Immortality (Stephen Hall) on the embryonic stem cell wars of the 90s/2000s and the parallels are… extremely familiar

“What is most disturbing is not the specifics of this case but the arbitrariness and capriciousness of the process. … The consequences are already visible. In January, Moderna’s CEO announced the company will no longer invest in new Phase 3 vaccine trials for infectious diseases… Vaccines for Epstein-Barr virus, herpes, and shingles have been shelved.” @ATabarrok
