Located at the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, ✨Manas Tiger Reserve✨ in Assam was first notified as a wildlife sanctuary in 1928, declared a Tiger Reserve in 1973, and later inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It takes its name from the Manas River (named after the Hindu snake god Manasa ), which flows from Bhutan into India, carving a landscape of floodplains, grasslands, and evergreen forests. Its forests range from tropical semi-evergreen and moist deciduous to riverine grasslands- habitats that sustain an astonishing diversity: tigers, elephants, rhinos, wild water buffalo, golden langurs, clouded leopards, and the world’s last remaining population of wild pygmy hogs. Manas is also a Biosphere Reserve, Elephant Reserve, and Important Bird Area. ✨Sariska Tiger Reserve✨, named after the Sariska region in Alwar district of Rajasthan, was once used as a hunting ground by the royal family of Alwar. It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1955 and later designated a tiger reserve in 1978. The reserve stretches across the rugged Aravalli hills and features dry deciduous and scrub forests, rocky terrain, and grasslands, making it a dry-zone habitat for tigers. It is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including tigers, leopards, striped hyenas, jungle cats, and the elusive rusty-spotted cat. The nearby Siliserh Lake further enriches the ecosystem, supporting crocodiles and attracting many migratory birds. ✨Parambikulam Tiger Reserve✨, declared under Project Tiger in 2009, derives its name from the Parambikulam River and valley, and is constituted around Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary with adjoining buffer forests in the extension of Anamalai Hills of Kerala. The reserve protects a Western Ghats landscape of tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen and moist deciduous forests, extensive teak plantations, shola–grassland patches and riparian systems. Parambikulam is an important tiger and elephant habitat and a key connectivity link between Anamalai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu and the Nelliampathy–Palakkad Gap landscapes, supporting wildlife movement across the southern Western Ghats. ✨Pilibhit Tiger Reserve✨, notified under Project Tiger in 2014, derives its name from the town and district of Pilibhit and is constituted by Pilibhit Wildlife Sanctuary together with adjoining forest divisions along the Indo-Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh. The reserve represents a unique Terai landscape of sal-dominated moist deciduous forests, tall alluvial grasslands, swamps and riverine systems fed by the Sharda, Mala and Khannot rivers. Pilibhit is a high-density tiger habitat and a vital transboundary connectivity link with Nepal’s Shuklaphanta and Dudhwa landscapes. ✨Satkosia Tiger Reserve✨, brought under Project Tiger in 2007, derives its name from the spectacular Satkosia Gorge (“seven kos”) carved by the Mahanadi River and is constituted by Satkosia Gorge Wildlife Sanctuary together with adjoining reserve forests across Angul and Nayagarh districts of Odisha. The reserve represents an Eastern Ghats landscape of tropical dry and moist deciduous forests, riverine forests, deep gorges and sandy river islands along the Mahanadi. ✨Namdapha Tiger Reserve✨, declared under Project Tiger in 1983, derives its name from the Namdapha River and is constituted around Namdapha National Park with buffer forests in Changlang district, Arunachal Pradesh. The reserve spans the Eastern Himalaya landscape ranging from tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forests at low elevations to temperate broadleaf and alpine forests at higher altitudes, making it India’s only tiger reserve to host four large felids (tiger, leopard, clouded leopard and snow leopard). Namdapha is a globally significant biodiversity hotspot, supporting wide-ranging species and high endemism. ✨Ranthambore Tiger Reservee✨, brought under Project Tiger in 1973, derives its name from the historic Ranthambore Fort that crowns the reserve and is constituted by Ranthambore National Park together with Sawai Mansingh Wildlife Sanctuary and Kailadevi Wildlife Sanctuary, forming a large protected complex in eastern Rajasthan. The reserve represents a distinctive semi-arid Aravalli–Vindhyan landscape of tropical dry deciduous dhok forests, open scrub, rocky plateaus, lakes and seasonal streams. ✨Sanjay–Dubri Tiger Reserve✨, declared under Project Tiger in 2008, derives its name from Sanjay National Park and the adjoining Dubri Wildlife Sanctuary, which together constitute the core of the reserve along with surrounding buffer forests in Sidhi and Singrauli districts of northeastern Madhya Pradesh. The reserve represents an Upper Vindhyan–Baghelkhand landscape of tropical dry deciduous forests dominated by sal, mixed hardwoods and bamboo, interspersed with plateaus, valleys and river systems of the Son basin. It is an important eastern Central Indian tiger habitat and functions as a connectivity landscape linking forest tracts of Madhya Pradesh with those of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. ✨Bhadra Tiger Reserve✨, declared under Project Tiger in 1998, takes its name from the Bhadra River that flows through the landscape and is constituted by Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary along with adjoining reserve forests in the Western Ghats of Karnataka. The reserve protects a diverse elevational mosaic of tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen and moist deciduous forests interspersed with shola–grassland elements and riparian corridors, supporting high levels of biodiversity. ✨Orang Tiger Reserve✨, declared in 2016, derives its name from the Orang River, a tributary of the Brahmaputra, and is constituted around Orang National Park with surrounding buffer forests on the north bank of the Brahmaputra in Assam. The reserve protects a dynamic floodplain landscape of alluvial grasslands, riverine forests, wetlands and tropical moist deciduous patches shaped by annual floods. Orang is a critical Brahmaputra floodplain tiger habitat, noted for supporting tiger, one-horned rhinoceros, elephant and rich avifauna. ✨Srivilliputhur–Megamalai Tiger Reserve✨, notified in 2021, takes its name from the Srivilliputhur town and the Meghamalai ranges (literally meaning “high wavy mountains), and was constituted by integrating the Srivilliputhur Grizzled Giant Squirrel and Meghamalai Wildlife Sactuaries. The forests range from tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen, moist deciduous stands to high-elevation shola–grassland pockets — with perennial streams that feed the Vaigai basin, sustaining regional hydrology and plant diversity. The reserve strengthens landscape connectivity across the southern Western Ghats, providing a link between Periyar and Kalakad-Mundanthurai landscape clusters. ✨Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve✨, originally declared Bandhavgarh National Park in 1968 and designated a tiger reserve in 1993, takes its name from the Bandhavgarh Fort and associated Ramayana legend (Bandhav = brother, garh = fort). The reserve incorporates Bandhavgarh National Park together with adjacent protected and buffer areas (including Panpatha and surrounding forest divisions) to form a contiguous protected landscape. Its habitats are a mosaic of moist deciduous and sal-dominated forests with extensive bamboo understories, interspersed grasslands/meadows, rocky outcrops and riparian corridors. The inaugural session of the @ITECnetwork Executive Course on Capacity Building for “Wildlife and Conservation Practitioners” was successfully held in @Bandipur_TR , Karnataka. The programme brought together 38 senior officials and conservation experts from 22 countries, fostering meaningful international collaboration on wildlife conservation. During the session, @ntca_india shared critical insights on big cat conservation, with special emphasis on India’s codified tiger conservation framework- a model grounded in rigorous fieldcraft, robust science, and decades of on-ground experience. NTCA convened the Conference of Chief Wildlife Wardens of Tiger Range States and Field Directors of Tiger Reserves at Sariska, Rajasthan, chaired by the Hon'ble Union Minister @byadavbjp @moefcc. The meeting was also attended by the Hon'ble Forest Minister, Government of Rajasthan @Sanjay4India1. The conference led to clear directions on strengthening rescue–rehabilitation–release infrastructure and advancing active management of tiger populations in the tiger landscapes of India, reviewing progress of the All India Tiger Estimation, optimising utilisation of CSS–Project Tiger funds, and expediting resolution of pending tiger mortality cases. Over 600 rivers originate or flow through these landscapes, where forests function as critical watersheds, conserving soil and moisture, recharging groundwater, and naturally purifying water.
