Balmer caused the 16-week-old Cane Corso/American bulldog crossbreed physical and mental suffering which left her in such severe pain that she died. He inflicted horrendous injuries against the puppy, which included deliberately burning her and striking her multiple times, causing numerous fractures and wounds. He held her on a hot surface leaving her with second and third-degree burns. He also physically attacked the dog and fractured one of her teeth. She suffered scalding to her face, hind limbs, tail and pads, was bleeding from a wound to her shoulder. Blood was coming from her nose and mouth combined with lameness and swelling. She was in acute pain prior to death. On Christmas Eve 2024, a call was made to the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline by a vet with concerns about the condition of a deceased dog that had been brought into the practice. The vet explained Mabel had been brought into the practice multiple times before with serious injuries and that there were suspicions she had suffered significant abuse. A Scottish SPCA Inspector spoke to Levi Balmer on the phone, and an investigation was launched into the cause of Mabel’s death. The Scottish SPCA requested permission for Mabel’s body to be uplifted in order to carry out a post-mortem, which Balmer agreed to. On the same day, the Inspector attended the vet to see Mabel’s body. The Scottish SPCA Inspector said: “The image of Mabel still follows me to this day. It was quickly evident she has been victim of extreme abuse and cruelty during her short life; her wounds were so severe. It is one of the most distressing cases I have ever dealt with.” Balmer admitted causing unnecessary physical and mental suffering to Mabel. This had left her in such severe pain that she passed away, with her death likely being caused by pain-related stress. This morning, not one but seven Mali X puppies were found dumped in a box and brought into our care. Alongside them came a three-legged Staffie Cross who is painfully thin, with cuts to his face and fear written all over him, and a small terrier who arrived badly matted, dirty and passing blood in his urine. All of these dogs came through our doors today. Each of them will have their own story and their own experiences that have led them here, but what they all share is the urgent need for safety, compassion and immediate support. As soon as they arrived, our team carefully assessed them, administered the first aid they required, and ensured they had everything they needed in those crucial first hours, warm beds, fresh water, nourishing food and, just as importantly, gentle reassurance to help them begin to feel secure. Days like this are emotionally heavy, but they also shine a light on the extraordinary dedication of our staff who respond without hesitation, always placing the dogs’ welfare at the centre of everything they do. We are incredibly proud of the calm professionalism, resilience and kindness shown by our team when faced with situations like this, and of the steady, often unseen work that goes into helping each dog start their recovery journey. My husband died in July 2025. We had shared a life for thirty-two years. After he was gone, the house didn’t just feel empty—it felt hollow, like the walls themselves were holding their breath. My son told me I needed something to take care of. I told him I was managing. I wasn’t. On a quiet Sunday—January 18th, 2026—I drove to the local shelter. I didn’t go there looking for a dog. I just couldn’t bear another afternoon sitting alone in that stillness. A volunteer stopped me near the kennels for senior dogs. She said gently, “These two have been here almost six months. Their fee is waived now, but no one’s interested.” Arthur He was eight and walked like every step had to be negotiated with time itself. Rowan was tan with a dark patch over one eye. He couldn’t hear. He was also eight. They were brothers. Their person had surrendered them after falling gravely ill at 81. They’d never been apart. They’d waited—quietly—together. I asked why no one wanted them. She didn’t sugarcoat it. “They’re older. Medical needs. And they have to go as a pair. Most people want young dogs.” I watched Arthur lower himself slowly onto a blanket. Rowan followed immediately, pressing his head into his brother’s shoulder like it was the most natural thing in the world. No signals. No sound. Just trust. It felt achingly familiar. I asked, “What’s the adoption fee?” She smiled sadly. “There isn’t one. No one’s taken them.” I said, “I will.” She looked up. “Both of them?” “Yes,” I said. “I won’t split up two old souls who’ve already lost their person.” That was a week ago.
