🙏 to Manuel Serrano for writing a preview 👉 doi.org/10.1016/j.cmet… for our study NOW IN PRINT @Cell_Metabolism. We introduce the "Stimulus-Induced Programming Hijacks Ontogeny" (SIPHON) model for chromatin & transcriptome remodeling in organismal maturation & aging We provide compelling data that “cell identity loss” in aging represents the hijacking of a developmental mechanism via epigenetic de-repression of AP-1 rich regulatory elements through stress/stimulus processes. The resulting predictable transcription factor network changes may drive many aging phenotypes. Link to our study 👉 doi.org/10.1016/j.cmet… It was an absolute pleasure to work with @Cell_Metabolism & @AmberMuellerPhD The project spanned 15 labs and was led by talented co-first authors @rjPatrick19 & @MarinaNaval, with crucial contributions from @nikkideshpande, Yifei Huang @Jason836452, Jingyu Zhang @IAMorlandozhang, Xiaoli Chen, Ying Yang @haokandeyy, @Mohammad_E1990, Kanupriya Tiwari,  Minh Tran, @AMohamed85, Binxu Wang, Di Xia, Jun Ma, Jacqueline Bayliss, Kahlia Wong, Michael Hun, @Sallyxsun, Benjamin Cao, Denny Cottle, Tara Catterall, Hila Barzilai-Tutsch, @robinleetroskie, @ZhianAnthony, Andrea F. Thanks! We provide compelling data that “cell identity loss” in aging represents the hijacking of a developmental mechanism via epigenetic de-repression of AP-1 rich regulatory elements. The resulting predictable transcription factor network changes may drive many aging phenotypes We show AP-1-linked chromatin opening underpins transcription factor network remodelling during maturation across cell types (e.g. to slow growth/early-life processes). Ongoing chromatin opening (e.g. via inflammation/systemic factors) further dampens early-life circuitry as antagonistic pleiotropy Paper link: doi.org/10.1016/j.cmet…

[NEW] Christian Nefzger's lab @IMBatUQ reveals how chromatin remodeling driven by the AP-1 pioneering transcription factor supports cell maturation. Beware o' the mechanism pirated during #aging to induce the appearance of age-related phenotypes! 🏴‍☠️bit.ly/3zOqBux

Very cool multi-omic analysis of development and aging across >45 mouse and human cell types. They find a transcription factor binding site signature common to aging and development and propose that activator protein 1 (AP-1) drives maturation and is later hijacked in aging.

Excited that Channel 7 & 9 covered our @Cell_Metabolism study along with 62 news outlets. It suggests AP-1-linked chromatin opening drives organismal maturation across cell types by disrupting the activity of 'early-life' gene regulatory elements—a mechanism hijacked in aging via ongoing chromatin opening.

Our new @Cell_Metabolism study proposes a mechanistic connection between molecular remodelling in development & aging. We uncovered a common transcription factor pattern linked to chromatin remodelling in organismal maturation & aging. Link tinyurl.com/d39ru3s8 Thread 🧵👇1/10

Hundreds of overseas PhD students from countries such as Iran, China, India and Pakistan are waiting as long as 3 years to have their visas approved. Academics are frustrated by the wait times with fully funded research on hold and students with scholarships, stuck in limbo.

@KMooreGilbert @HamiNiroumand @ClareONeilMP @andrewjgiles When I visited the Aus embassador to Iran last year, Ms. Sachs told me the same thing and I confirmed that this would be the case but all of us have provided ALL the requested information & documents/records check shouldn't take more than 1 year. It is simple; grant or reject!

@HamiNiroumand @ClareONeilMP @andrewjgiles Agreed! Obviously given the use of student placements by IRGC to send informers to Australia, applications necessarily warrant more scrutiny. But innocent Iranian students should not be made to suffer as a result!

Really disappointed that Labor voted against my amendment to extend the Paid Parental Leave scheme to PhD students. This is a cruel and gaping oversight by the government. This is why PhD students deserve PPL and significantly higher stipends:

@andrewjgiles Actions speak louder than words! Notice the huge gap between your promises & performance! Your system has deliberately ordered to hibernate visa case of fully-funded phd students from some countries and you're talking about 'systematic exploitation'?!! #student_visa #phd

This is a shocking story. And while it’s awful, it’s far from isolated. This can’t continue. Acting to end the cruel and systematic exploitation of migrant workers is a priority for the Albanese Government. abc.net.au/news/2023-03-0…
