This is a point I discussed for subscribers of my Daily Edition just yesterday, and it is an important lesson to share with others more broadly. Seeing the McClellan Oscillator cross down through the zero level CAN be a useful sell signal, but the context is essential. To help make that interpretation, it is useful to look at the nature of the structures above and below zero. A "complex" structure is one with a lot of chopping up and down on one side of the zero level. A complex structure says its side is "in charge". A "simple" structure just sees the Oscillator go across and back without building any complexity, and its message is that side is not in charge. The most recent structure above zero was a complex one. We can still get a brief corrective move, but the presumption is that the bulls are still really in charge. So a crossing below zero now is suspicious of being a false breakdown, and perhaps even a great buying opportunity. Preliminary breadth numbers on April 30 show that the Oscillator will be going back above zero if we close this way, leaving that dip below as a "simple" structure, and offering the bulls the opportunity to resume their work, rested and refreshed. The message of a complex structure remains in effect until it is countermanded by either a replacement simple structure, or by a divergence relative to prices. We do not have either of those yet, so the message is that the bulls are still in charge. If the Oscillator does cross back above zero and leaves just a simple structure, then the message about the bulls being in charge would get canceled. For this reason, just knowing the numerical value of the Oscillator each day is not that helpful. One needs a chart to see the context.
