Former DFL leader Cynthia Martin enters guilty plea in fatal 2024 hit-and-run of teen The plea deal includes 364 days in jail for the death of 19-year-old Carter Haithcock. Martin was charged in November 2024 but remained chair of the 8th District DFL until December 2025. Shortly after Haithcock’s death, Alpha News contacted the Itasca County DFL, where Martin was vice chair, about reports of a hit-and-run involving Martin. At the time, the Itasca County DFL seemed to deny her involvement by stating: “The accident has nothing to do with Itasca County DFL.” In response to a follow-up inquiry, the Itasca County DFL appeared to dismiss the idea of the crash even being newsworthy, writing: “Accidents happen; the accident is under investigation; the accident has nothing to do with Itasca County DFL. End of ‘story.’”

🚨WATCH: Assistant U.S. AG Colin McDonald says the fraud charges announced today "include the highest loss amount ever charged in a Medicaid case in Minnesota." "One patient was supposed to be receiving 24-hour care through this program, but he was actually being serviced by a fraudster and received no services. This patient was later found dead. "Meanwhile, the architect of this fraud scheme was billing Medicaid as if he was providing care to this patient." Federal authorities announced new fraud charges against 15 individuals today. According to McDonald, the fraudsters targeted $90 million in taxpayer funds with their schemes. "We will not, full stop, tolerate this greed and deceit," he said. "This is just the beginning."
