🥳 Huge preprint 🔔 Today we share something our group has been working toward for a long time, led by @LucasMoriniere We asked can we predict which receptor a phage targets from its genome sequence alone? For most phages, we couldn’t. So Lucas set out to do something crazy!

New research by @Basler_Lab reveals a surprising microbial trade-off: The bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa activates a general defense program to survive “speargun” attacks from rival bacteria, but this defense makes it more vulnerable to antibiotics. 👇biozentrum.unibas.ch/news/detail/ho…

In mitochondria, respiratory supercomplexes (blue) pump protons across crista membranes to create an electrochemical gradient, fueling adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthase (pink) to regenerate ATP—the energy currency of life. Now, cryo–electron tomography captures these supercomplexes in their native organization, illuminating how the coordinated action of these molecular machines drives life’s fundamental energy conversion. Researchers from IIT Kanpur's Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering have successfully visualized the atomic structure of CXCR2, a key receptor implicated in cancer progression and respiratory disorders. Published in Molecular Cell, this discovery opens up new possibilities for targeted therapies for diseases such as COPD, asthma, atherosclerosis, and pancreatic cancer. The team utilized advanced cryogenic-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to explore how CXCR2 interacts with multiple chemokines, revealing a "lock-and-key" mechanism that explains how CXCR2 recognizes and activates these proteins. This breakthrough provides a foundation for designing next-generation therapeutics aimed at specifically targeting CXCR2 to reduce its role in inflammatory diseases and cancers. With support from various grants, the research team is developing small molecules and antibodies targeting CXCR2. These potential therapeutics are set to undergo lab and animal testing, bringing IIT Kanpur closer to pioneering innovative treatments for cancer and respiratory diseases. The research team at IIT Kanpur consisted of Shirsha Saha, Saloni Sharma, Manisankar Ganguly, Nashrah Zaidi, Divyanshu Tiwari, Nabarun Roy, Nilanjana Banerjee, and Ramanuj Banerjee. This study also involved collaborative efforts with researchers from the University of Tokyo, Japan, including Fumiya Sano, Hiroaki Akasaka, Takaaki Kobayashi, Yuzuru Itoh, Wataru Shihoya, and Osamu Nureki, as well as Andy Chevigne from the Luxembourg Institute of Health, Luxembourg. Professor Arun Kumar Shukla, the lead investigator, emphasized that the findings offer a blueprint for designing targeted therapeutics to inhibit CXCR2. Supported by grants from the DBT Wellcome Trust India Alliance, SERB, ICMR, and the LADY TATA Memorial Trust, this work is set to reinforce IIT Kanpur's commitment to advancing global biomedical research.
