It has been six months since the Rapid Support Forces captured Al Fashir and detained Sudanese journalist Muammar Ibrahim. He is held incommunicado and RSF-led TASIS gov spox tells me today that he will soon face “legal proceedings.” What is his crime? news.sky.com/story/six-mont…

My colleagues and I are deeply concerned that NYC Health + Hospitals’s decision to close the Bellevue Program for Survivors of Torture puts highly vulnerable patients at risk. For 30 years, we have cared for more than 10,000 survivors of torture from over 100 countries. There could not be a worse time to close this program. @NYCMayor @AOC @RepJerryNadler nytimes.com/2026/04/25/nyr…

NEW: Why is Bellevue closing the iconic 31-year-old program that has treated more than 10,000 patients who survived acid attacks, war, gang rapes and other torture? nytimes.com/2026/04/25/nyr…

Bellevue's Program for Survivors of Torture has treated people for 31 years who came in having survived acid attacks, machete wounds, war and gang rapes. Now New York is closing it, because of Trump-era fears about its federal funds. My story @NYTMetro nytimes.com/2026/04/25/nyr…

South Sudan stands at a dangerous crossroads. Conflict up. Hunger up. Displacement up. Attacks on aid workers up. I saw it firsthand and felt the scale of this despair. We need access, funding and respect for international humanitarian law. My remarks: bit.ly/4vHf7BC

#Ethiopia: Ahmed is throttling free expression in #Ethiopia: The Economist “Bold are the pens that remain unshaken.” In today’s Ethiopia “journalists often disappear mysteriously nowadays, taken by unidentified men to undisclosed places on suspicion of unspecified crimes.” The latest victim is Million Beyene, managing editor of the Addis Standard, a prominent newspaper and one of the few local outlets still brave enough to criticize the government. On April 15th masked men in civilian clothes abducted Mr Million from the newspaper’s office in Addis Ababa, the capital, saying he was “needed for questioning”. No one has heard from him since. The police deny that Mr Million is in their custody. But in February the government had revoked the Standard’s license, accusing it of violating unspecified laws and endangering “the national interest”. Last year security forces raided the paper’s office and detained its journalists. Many have resigned for fear of government reprisals. Scores of Ethiopian journalists have been arrested, beaten or forced into exile. Many foreign reporters have been expelled. In 2024 one was arrested while meeting an opposition politician and then deported. The politician was assassinated a few weeks later. The government promises more persecution. In February an official at the media regulator claimed that the Standard and others were waging a “co-ordinated information war” against Ethiopia. Fighting them was a matter of “national survival”. Ethiopia’s “sword remains unsheathed”, he added. Bold are the pens that remain unshaken. economist.com/middle-east-an…

Sudan’s war is no longer just a Sudanese tragedy. It is a continental stress test and it is unfolding largely without decisive African leadership. This has to change write @justrutz & myself write in the @mailandguardian mg.co.za/thought-leader…

During the Rapid Support Forces (#RSF) control of the agriculturally essential Al #Jazira scheme, tremendous damage was done, even as #Sudan has been in the midst of famine and much of the country continues to face a “Catastrophic” (IPC Phase 5) threat of acute malnutrition. In comparing the RSF and #SAF, the dramatic change in Al Jazira should weigh heavily. The RSF is a force of pure destruction. The best that can be said of Al #Burhan and the SAF is that they are the lesser of two evils. Al Jazira shows how much this difference matters.

Urgent Notice! After a week-long, relentless search to establish his whereabouts, JAKENN Publishing PLC and its legal team have determined that journalist #Million_Beyene was taken from his workplace at the Addis Standard newsroom by intelligence officers and is being held at an undisclosed, informal detention facility in Addis Abeba. No family members, colleagues, or legal counsel have been granted access to him, and his health condition remains unknown. Moreover, he has not been brought before a court within the constitutionally mandated 48-hour period. JAKENN Publishing PLC strongly condemns these actions, which constitute a grave violation of due process and fundamental rights. We call for the immediate disclosure of Million’s whereabouts, full access to his family and legal representatives, and his unconditional release in accordance with the law.

I was briefed by representatives of the Bring Kids Back UA team, Oleksandr Bevz and Maksym Maksymov, on the results of the initiative’s work. In total, since the start of the initiative, more than 2,100 Ukrainian children abducted by Russia have been brought back. Of them, 150 have been returned since the beginning of this year. I thank all partners who are helping us in this effort. We also discussed support for our efforts at the level of international organizations. Recently, for the first time at the UN level, the deportation and forced transfer of our children was classified as a crime against humanity. This is very important, and this work must continue. We are preparing for the meeting of the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children at the ministerial level, which will take place on May 11 in Brussels. We are counting on broad participation, concrete decisions, and practical support from our partners.

If you want to understand 2000s Boston, eat steak tips and drink beer at while watching a Sox game at a 99 with a person who has lived within walking distance of Harvard or MIT without ever having a prayer of attending either school.
Mac@cheapiemac

Biggest joke I’ve ever seen. Everyone in Boston knows this 99 deserves historical status. We can’t be ripping out everything that makes Boston great for soulless shitty apartment buildings. There are empty buildings in seaport. Lower the cost instead of destroying the city.

Our new investigation reveals that Moscow isn’t stepping back in the Sahel. Instead, it’s doubling down. We found that the Africa Corps is leveraging Russian and Guinean businesses for military purposes. And the new major hub? The Guinea Conakry port terminal, operated by two Russian-Guinean companies. Civilians are paying the price: Russian fighters perpetrate rape, torture, beheadings, mutilation, and summary executions. Read our latest report: thesentry.org/reports/doubli…

#Delling provides yet another example of #RSF willingness to lay siege to towns and cities with no regard for the effects on Sudanese civilians. And where the RSF actually controls towns, its brutal thuggery is the only governing power. This looms as #Sudan’s future wherever the RSF prevails. To be sure, the #SAF is also responsible for serial war crimes in its effort to eliminate the RSF threat. But the reaction of civilians to the restoration of SAF control in areas previously controlled by the RSF speaks volumes about popular assessment of the genocidal militia force, supported unstintingly by the UAE.
