I'm a Republican, and I respectfully disagree. We are not adopting anyone's talking points. We (veterans, supporters, and a growing number of fellow Republicans in Congress) are in opposition to Section 101 (as currently proposed) and Section 108 of the TCAVA legislation because 101 reduces veterans' earned retirement (below Major Richard Star Act provisions), and 108 codifies into law ratings changes that were proposed by the VA in 2022, and uses these savings - on the backs of other veterans) to subsidize this bill. After four years, these rating changes have faced so much opposition (publicly and legally) that they still have not been implemented -- and there are no plans to implement them (contrary to the popularized false talking points from pro-TCAVA mouthpieces). No amount of dark-money influence will deny the truth about this proposed legislation. We see through the attempts, and they will not succeed on our watch.

@CC_Varmints @DavidSt59726197 It’s not. I’ve called all my reps. They just don’t care. Not supporting it means I don’t get my pension. Everyone keeps saying the discharge petitions, it’s stuck at 215 signatures and would still need to pass in the senate.

Some organizations have raised concerns. We hear them. But rejecting TCAVA because of the offset means walking away from The Major Richard Star Act relief, caregiver support, survivor protections, and better healthcare — with no viable alternative path currently on the table that can pass PAYGO rules. If the savings are happening anyway, they belong to veterans — not the Treasury. That is the practical, veteran-first choice.

Wiley's issued the following statement on July 17 about the Take Care of America’s Veterans Act: The American Legion has never backed down from a fight for veterans. We did not quit on the GI Bill or Agent Orange, and we won't now. The Take Care of America's Veterans Act includes more than 60 measures that will benefit tens of millions of veterans and their families — especially Gold Star families, combat-injured medically retired veterans, surviving spouses, and caregivers. It includes critical funding for expanded suicide prevention programs and tens of billions of dollars for veterans’ programs are at risk if Congress fails to act. We will not be distracted by misinformation or fear-mongering. The facts matter: TCAVA includes no retroactive cuts. VA/OMB will make rating changes by regulation regardless of what happens to TCAVA, and future veterans rated under the new rules will still have a stronger VA healthcare and benefits system that works for them. The question is not between TCAVA and a perfect bill. The question is whether those savings will support veterans programs or be lost to the Treasury. Those who endorse AND oppose TCAVA have supported efforts in Congress to pass all of these bills for years. But notably, those who continue to oppose this bill have not offered a realistic alternative to secure these critical reforms. Passing a “clean” bill waiving PAYGO has not happened, despite years of bipartisan effort for a slew of these bills, and will not happen now. Finding another DOD or VA offset has not happened. Those claiming otherwise are not being objective or forthright. Too many people have already waited years - in some cases decades - for these critical reforms. And none of these hypothetical options will stop VA/OMB from finalizing the rule. We stand with 22 other veterans and military service organizations who have joined this call. A postponed vote does not mean the fight is over. We will continue to work with members of Congress and staff in both chambers, of both parties, to find a way forward. The time to act is now. Contact your members of Congress to urge them to pass TCAVA. We urge Congress to bring TCAVA to a vote as soon as possible and pass the bill. As the voice of nearly 3 million members of The American Legion family, we remain fully committed to this fight!

@ebrockwayink I’m asking respectfully to anyone who can answer it: what is the meaningful path forward to get the clean Star act passed? I am one of the 50+ thousand veterans being denied their pension. until someone can convince me of a path forward I don’t see an alternative to TCAVA.

Fact check: The RegInfo screenshot does not say the VA’s tinnitus and sleep apnea changes take effect in April 2027. It shows a proposed rule still in rulemaking. The “04/00/2027” date is VA’s current target for final action and not an effective date. It’s been moving through this process since 2022. No Final Rule in the Federal Register = no change in law or policy. Read the document and not just the Facebook (or Twitter) caption.

Im sure I’ll get some shit for this but I’m not a fan of the Major Star Act… But “To pay for it, the bill simply reduced future disability benefits for sleep apnea and tinnitus, some of the most abused ratings that cost taxpayers billions and can’t be connected to service in a meaningful or scientific way.” Now I’m really not a fan. This is a disaster. What do you guys think?

@amiller0311 @RepLuna @RepMaxMiller As a chapter 61 retireee, I did not support the bill. That said if your injuries are combat related why not apply for Combat Related Special Compensation? That is available for "Combat" related disabilities.
