Declaration of the American Veteran

We, our Nation’s Veterans —
your sons and daughters,
mothers and fathers,
sisters and brothers —
declare that our long patience has been met only with betrayal.
We do not seek novelty, nor the reinvention of principle, but to place before our fellow citizens
the plain common sense of the matter.
We have been patient.
We have been reasonable.
We have petitioned,
testified,
waited,
and pleaded.
And
“our repeated petitions have been answered only by repeated injury.”
The Department of Veterans Affairs was founded to serve those who served.
Yet its record is one of delay, denial, and disdain.
The VA has delayed care until illness became permanent,
until wounds grew irreparable,
until lives were lost.
The VA has falsified records and hidden failures, burying truth with the bodies of those it failed.
The VA has known of the suicide epidemic,
yet distorted the numbers, concealed the scale,
and watched as more than forty Veterans a day — over sixteen thousand a year —
took their own lives,
casualties not of war, but of betrayal.
The VA has silenced dissent,
branding Veterans who demand justice as “disruptive,” and targeting whistleblowers with retaliation, intimidation, and ruin.
The VA has allowed corruption and incompetence to endure,
while those responsible faced no justice.
These are not the errors of a day, nor the failings of a few.
They are a system sustained by neglect,
insulated by bureaucracy,
and deaf for decades to the very voices it was built to serve and care for.
Let it be clear: we name not an enemy but a failing institution.
We extend once more the hand of partnership.
Yet partnership requires truth,
and truth demands change.
If the People’s representatives, the press, and our fellow citizens stand with us,
let them speak and act.
Let them show where THEY stand,
and who THEY are.
But know this: whether joined or abandoned,
we will act.
For we are still what we have always been —
sentinels of this grand Republic,
guardians of its promises,
and brothers and sisters to one another.
We do not ask permission to live with dignity.
We claim it.
And in so doing, we draw this line:
that never again will Veterans be left to die in silence, or live in neglect,
while those sworn to serve them look away.
