The Medical Oncology dayward and Oncology Pharmacy in Mayo University Hospital have recently adopted NCIS (national cancer information system) for electronic chemotherapy prescribing. Currently, ~95% of patients have been transferred from paper prescriptions to NCIS electronic prescriptions for chemotherapy. By my calculations, the service in MUH is the second most advanced service in the country after UHG, in terms of NCIS adoption. NCIS chemotherapy charting cuts ‘prescribing’ errors by up to 80%. This is thanks to the very hard working staff nurses, nurse managers, clinical nurse specialists, and oncology pharmacists in MUH, who - with the support of hospital management - were brave enough to try something new*. In particular Deirdre Allen and Sylvia O’Rourke, but also many, many others. This is a team achievement to be proud of. I am certainly proud of the nursing and pharmacy staff in MUH.
