Children like 8-year-old Ritaj are experiencing devastating losses as the brutal war in Gaza continues. UNICEF is supporting them with essential needs, including distributing over 500 wheelchairs to children with injuries. The suffering of children must stop.

By the end of last year, #Haiti's humanitarian appeal was only 42% funded. This enabled humanitarians to provide vital aid to displaced and vulnerable families. But many others could not be reached due to insufficient funding and the growing scale of the crisis. More ⬇️

On 8 January, 3 children from Gaza, Palestine, with severe injuries caused by Israeli airstrikes arrived at our hospital in Jordan after months of delays and rejections by the Israeli authorities. Meanwhile, 2 other patients have still been denied medical evacuation from Gaza with no clear explanation. “It has taken 3 months to evacuate 3 children in need of medical care. The recovery of injured children in Gaza depends on them getting timely care – these delays can lead to life-long disabilities and even death from infections," says Moeen Mahmood, our country director in Jordan. Last November, Israeli authorities also blocked the medical evacuation of 8 children and their caretakers from Gaza who needed medical care, including a two-year-old with leg amputations, to our hospital in Jordan. The healthcare system in Gaza has been systematically dismantled by Israeli forces. Patients in need of specialised medical care have nowhere to go. According to WHO, there are at least 12,000 people still in need of medical evacuation from Gaza. Since 7 October 2023, we have only been able to evacuate 13 children from Gaza to our hospital in Jordan. We call on the Israeli authorities to ensure medical evacuations for all Palestinians in need of care now, including their caregivers, while guaranteeing their safe, voluntary and dignified return to Gaza.
