AI just passed dental school finals! Our open-access study in the @The_BDJ put three large language models (#GPT-4o, #Grok 2 and #Gemini) through every written and oral examination from Years 1-5 of a UK BDS and Years 1-3 of the BSc Dental Hygiene and Therapy curriculum. We asked: 1. Can LLMs pass dentistry exams? 2. Can they write good exam questions? Results: 1. Yes - All three models cleared every multiple-choice test and nearly every short-answer paper, including the final-year qualifying exams. 2. Maybe - AI-generated questions had variability and rarely assessed higher-order thinking skills but could reduce exam-writing time and introduce greater diversity into the question bank.
