It was truly awful to see that not a single bishop turned up for the remembrance of Ann Widdecombe in the House of Lords this week. A woman of deep, unwavering Roman Catholic faith, Ann centred her entire life and political career on her Christian beliefs, from her principled stands on life issues to her tireless advocacy for persecuted Christians. Her devotion to both Church and country was total and courageous. Even if they disagreed with some of her views, the least the Lords Spiritual could have done was show basic respect for her lifelong dedication. Instead, their absence speaks volumes: too lost in woke values, lacking the courage to honour a woman of real conviction. A sad reflection on where parts of the establishment Church have drifted. Rest in peace, Ann, you were a true servant of faith and principle. 🙏

AN APOLOGY I was seriously wrong and insensitive in one of the several media appearances I made yesterday in reaction to the death of Ann Widdecombe. I got the timing and tone of my initial word portrait of her wrong. Of course I shared, and share, the horror at her murder and the respect for her remarkable and feisty political career. I also know that many people loved her for her subsequent showbiz stardom. Her untimely death is a horrible thing. My mistaken view was that in the context of rolling news coverage, I was being asked to contribute as an obituarist who has known her and interacted with her since the 1980s. This approach was premature. At no point was I expressing my personal feelings about her, that's not what I do. I was discussing her life in the round, based on the record of known facts and what she has said about herself, along with some recollections of our personal interactions. My choice of words on the spur of the moment was clumsy. I did not intend to offend though obviously I did.

As another man who once worked with me declares himself saddened by my beliefs on gender and sex, I thought it might be useful to compile a list for handy reference. Which of the following do you imagine makes actors and directors who aren’t involved with the HBO reboot of Harry Potter so miserable? Is it my belief that women and girls should have their own public changing rooms and bathrooms? That women should retain female-only rape crisis centres? That men don’t belong in women’s sport? That female prisoners shouldn’t be incarcerated with violent men and male sex offenders? That women should remain a protected class in law, because they have sex-specific needs and issues? That language should reflect reality rather than ideological jargon, especially in a medical context? That women shouldn’t be harassed, persecuted or fired for refusing to pretend humans can change sex? That women should not be threatened with violence and rape when they assert their rights? That freedom of speech and belief are essential to a pluralistic democratic society? That troubled minors, especially those who are gay, autistic and trauma-experienced, should be given mental health support instead of irreversible surgeries and drug treatments on non-existent evidence of benefit? That gay people shouldn’t be pressured to include the opposite sex in their dating pools, nor should they be smeared as ‘genital fetishists’ when they don’t? That cross-dressing heterosexual male fetishists aren’t actually oppressed, but having the time of their lives piggybacking off gender identity ideology? I can’t let this go unchallenged. That young man was, in my opinion and based on the video below, the clear victim of an assault. The video shows, for reasons that are entirely beyond my comprehension, the officer steaming directly into the victim. The officer made no effort to prevent the attack or apprehend the men who had just administered the violence. What I see in the video is the officer using speed and aggression at the moment of peak danger and confusion against the victim. The victim then controls himself the moment he realises it is now a police officer attacking him and not one of the multiple men who were attacking him a fraction of a second earlier. In my opinion Birmingham Police should drop the charges against this young man and ask the officer why she went for the victim on the ground and not the attackers!

Women have fought (and are still fighting) the single biggest land grab on their rights in my lifetime. Some have sacrificed their livelihoods and safety to combat a pernicious ideology that has infiltrated elite institutions, including government. Women have been persecuted, harassed, smeared, roughed up and forced to take employers to court for discrimination. They've suffered severe detriments purely for believing what the Supreme Court has ruled to be reasonable and correct: that women are a definable biological class that has specific rights under the law to which males, however they identify, are not entitled. Do these politicians have any shame? They sided with the persecutors, the issuers of death and rape threats, the violent men demanding access to women's and girls' protected spaces, including domestic abuse shelters, rape crisis centres and prison cells. Will any of them issue an apology or admit that they made a serious error in siding with well-funded activist groups lying about what the law actually said, and which had measurable, severe impact on some of society's most vulnerable women? As another public wave of death threats is issued against women because of the Supreme Court ruling, their silence has become deafening. I'm just one of millions of women disgusted by the lack of accountability or remorse. We will not forget.

🚨NEW: KC Anu Mohindru has been allowed to continue being a barrister despite falsely claiming that he studied medicine at Oxford University and for claiming that he was a qualified doctor. He also claimed that he had played cricket for the Bar, for Lashings Cricket Club and for MCC, and that he was a cricketing blue having represented Oxford in a varsity match against Cambridge. A tribunal disbarred him for telling his 23 Essex Street interviewers a “reckless, foolish and completely unnecessary lie” about studying at Oxford, and because he “doubled down" on his CV. On appeal at the High Court, Mr Justice Johnson overturned  Mohindru's expulsion, stating that it "would be wrong to impose the ultimate sanction merely because dishonesty is present".

Many women in their 80s haven't got the confidence or capability to do that.
