Robert Kagan’s Atlantic article, admitting the US having been defeated by Iran, while symbolically significant, is not a game changer. For reasons I won't speculate on, Kagan has had a major change in his declared worldviews. He just recently said that US/Israeli alliance is to US disadvantage. This is not Washington consensus, and special interests will make sure it doesn’t become one for now. It will take time for US/Israel relationship to change. The Israel lobby is extremely well-organized and powerful. Similarly, while we see a few people like Ray Dalio and Kagan openly say it now, US having been defeated by Iran is far from consensus. Furthermore, admitting it means a complete change in US relationship with its satellite states, which makes the admission much harder.
