California's capital city is known for the many trees that fill up its parks and line its streets. But persistent storms that have hit the so-called “City of Trees” and other parts of the state have damaged homes, vehicles and power lines. apnews.com/article/trees-…

The @NWSBayArea is using strong language to describe the potential impacts of the Wednesday storm. I think this is appropriate; this certainly has the potential to be one of the higher impact storms in some years, at least in certain locations. [10/n] #CAwx #CAwater

New Year's Eve storm now prominent on satellite imagery approaching CA, with classic "baroclinic leaf" feature apparent (indicative of a strengthening front). This strong & warm "Pineapple Express"-style #AtmosphericRiver will bring widespread heavy rain to Norcal. #CAwx #CAwater

Attending #AGU2022 and interested in learning about "Fire-Generated Tornadic Vortices" (FGTVs), counter-rotating vortex pairs (CVPs), and pyroCb? I'll be presenting on these extremes of wildfire behavior Tuesday (12/13) at 1135 AM CST in E271ab (bit.ly/3FpI63x). #AGU22

Update: Dec NMME runs out today show essentially the same pattern for Jan-May: a fairly strong dry signal across most of CA and the lower Colorado Basin (though there are a couple of individual models that don't agree, so as always nothing's set in stone). #CAwater #CAwx

Daniel Swain@Weather_West

Latest round of seasonal modeling continues to suggest a shift toward much drier conditions across CA & the lower Colorado basin beginning in Jan & continuing through spring. But it will be interesting to see what latest update shows when it comes out in few days. #CAwater (3/3)
