My newsletter about #WordPress, "Loop WP" Issue #132 is out now! Trusted WordPress Hosting? We look at an ever-controversial topic, especially recently with the legal drama in WordPress, WPE and “that” hosting page.

FTC has banned fake reviews. Wonder if any web hosting review sites should be worried...

@mpmike @Pressable @kinsta @wpengine @GoDaddy @DreamHost I'm afraid we'd end up with nothing honestly. But to explore the idea, how much would you contribute as a person/company? How many yous would it take to get enough to cover running them? Who gets tested in this scenario since in theory any company could be benchmarked?
English

Sup with this @kinsta, @wpengine, @GoDaddy, @DreamHost?
Y'all okay over there?

Benchmarks are your best defense against marketing nonsense and affiliate shenanigans. But they're useless if you don't know what to do with that data.

@TheJeffMatson @tiffany @carlhancock @Pressable @kinsta @wpengine @GoDaddy @DreamHost If I wanted to use k6 cloud (and I do, third party tools/clouds make it more easily accountable/repeatable in my opinion), they were charging $30/ip in the past, to 30k to run the basic level test with 1 user per ip. That's just IP costs.
English

@ReviewSignal @tiffany @carlhancock @Pressable @kinsta @wpengine @GoDaddy @DreamHost Definitely valid. Even cost aside, the first point is enough to make impossible to do fully stealth.

@TheJeffMatson @tiffany @carlhancock @Pressable @kinsta @wpengine @GoDaddy @DreamHost Yeah, I've had these discussions for a decade now :) I'm always happy to hear feedback and ideas. Completely anonymous testing would be the dream scenario. The only way to get around needing security help would be massive IP space to run from which becomes cost problem.
English

@carlhancock @Pressable @kinsta @wpengine @GoDaddy @DreamHost That said, I think a lot of companies get a lot of value out of actually going through the testing process. Many fix bugs, bottlenecks, ui/ux issues, copywriting, etc. Companies focused on 'gaming' things versus actually delivering a better product are going to fall behind /3
English

@Pressable @kinsta @wpengine @GoDaddy @DreamHost Hosts choose to participate? For some reason, I always missed this part of how @ReviewSignal did this. Begs the question... if hosts choose to participate and there is cooperation related to load testing and security... what is stopping the hosts from gaming the tests?
English

@carlhancock @Pressable @kinsta @wpengine @GoDaddy @DreamHost But if a company were to cheat and get caught, I would be very, very, vocal about it. And I would hope that the history of writing about bad behavior in this industry would be enough to know it's not a bluff. For reference see: reviewsignal.com/blog/2018/07/2… /2
English

@carlhancock @Pressable @kinsta @wpengine @GoDaddy @DreamHost It's not fraud proof, I try to check the servers before/during/after testing to see what I can see, make sure a plan doesn't jump to some higher tier or resources available on SSH suddenly triple. I expect everyone participates in good faith. /1
English

@TheJeffMatson @tiffany @carlhancock @Pressable @kinsta @wpengine @GoDaddy @DreamHost The main problems with doing the refund method:
1. I'm running DDoS attacks with analytics which requires permission and coordination because of security measures.
2. Cost chatgpt summed up everything per month and it was 15k+ (minimum). So 60k+ to run the tests.
English

@tiffany @carlhancock @Pressable @kinsta @wpengine @GoDaddy @DreamHost @ReviewSignal I’d prefer to see it done with the refund method. It’s more effort and leaves money floating, but it keeps the account hidden a little better from the host that’s being benchmarked.
