At the Deana Sherif sentencing hearing in Ottawa Superior Court today, defence attorney Nora Falathipour referred to the “ongoing genocide in Gaza” as an excuse for Deana’s crimes of assault with a weapon and criminal harassment. Somehow, references in the Canadian Antisemitism Education Foundation’s community impact statement about how street harassment of Jews triggers memories of the prelude to the Holocaust are inadmissible, but references to an “ongoing genocide” in Gaza are A-OK.👌 No proof of a genocide in Gaza is led before the court. But the Crown went along with it. Judge went along with it. Judge then made weird spontaneous comments about protesters in Minneapolis using whistles to show displeasure against ICE. Lots of other strange and inapposite analogies to the convoy protests, turning the sentencing submissions into a confused mess. Defence carries on about how virtuous and pro-social her client is. How her daughter was deprived of her mother for 340 days, and vice versa. Cue the smallest violins!!🎻 Crown knows about this picture below but doesn’t bother bringing it up because that would require an application to introduce evidence of prior discreditable conduct. Far too much work! Crown says we should be glad with the result we got, based on the Crown attorney’s 26 years of experience. Well, I have 26 years of experience doing what I do, and I don’t tell my clients to be content with a mediocre result based on mediocre efforts. Sloppy & lazy. Ontario deserves better quality.

I was called a “conspiracy theorist” in Parliament so I brought the receipts! Yesterday in the BC Legislature the government was asked why the word Provincial is being quietly scrubbed from our park signs. They called it a conspiracy theory and said they were just modernizing with a logo. The truth is in their own manuals. I did the digging and here is what they aren’t telling you. The official BC Writing Guide now labels the term British Columbians as exclusionary. Their new rule is to call yourselves people living in BC. Internal BC Parks documents describe our park system as part of a colonial history. By their logic Provincial is a colonial word that has to go. Go to the BC Parks website and search for the word Provincial. You will get zero results. They are erasing the word before your very eyes. I found the Renaming Checklist they are using to swap out park names. Removing Provincial from the sign is just step one. They are spending $16,000 per sign to remove the name of our province while hiking camping fees by up to $25 per night to pay for it. Don’t let them gaslight you.
