@cheryl_kernot Have you been persuaded to change your mind on anything significant lately? Or have you become impervious to evidence?

But illuminating in a kind of way. Impervious, defiantly. And there were no counter arguments remotely possible.

OMG I just sat with an Australian Trump devotee & “chatted” for half an hour. It was so scary hearing the history of Israel & Palestine as he has read it & quoted. And he was outright “I hate Islam & Muslims who practise it.” Haven’t experienced any of this for quite a while. 🤔

@MsUtopia @cheryl_kernot All those mass murderers of the 20th century were Utopians. Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot, Castro… All believed that if they could just implement their vision they could create a happily ever after ending for their people. Naive atheists are the most dangerous people of all.

@RobB916 @DanHollaway @peterboghossian Having a right doesn’t make an action right. In your earlier comment you mixed the two. Think about if someone saw a cop lawfully pull their gun but morally it was wrong. Can they do anything about that? Imagine the I Shot The Sheriff scenario from Bob Dylan.

@RobPeffer @DanHollaway @peterboghossian Your missing the point. Its not saying that no one else can be violent. Its at its bases is that when there is conflict the right to use violence falls to the state. Think about it like if someone saw a cop lawfully pull his gun then they pulled theirs and shot him.

There is a reason we have a legal system that gives the state a monopoly on violence. The moment we cede this, or make exceptions for the most foul of crimes, we descend into anarchy, tribalism, and barbarism. What might could convince right leaning accounts of this? Somalia.

@TimjboAU @MarkoMatvikov The vibe here is pure ordinariness. Mediocre, average, bland, vacant. Really on brand for Victorian Labor.

Jacinta knows Trump is broadly disliked in Australia. She also knows the strain on families and increased demand for charities predates Trump’s war with Iran. But it’s an opportunity to dismiss Labor’s failures and blame it all on him anyway. This is the kind of populist politics Labor has the temerity to accuse others of. Thankfully, Victorians can see through her crocodile tears. She’ll remain the least popular state leader in the country and one of the least popular Victorian Premiers in history.

@peterboghossian Sir, what is the recourse of a citizenry or society when the justice system no longer appears to pursue what is generally accepted as just outcomes? What can correct an ideological capture by one subculture within a society which uses it to oppress another?

Many right leaning accounts are now openly advocating vigilante justice and denial of trials for suspects who commit heinous crimes. While the urge for vengeance is understandable, extra legal violence has no role in civil society.
Will Tanner@Will_Tanner_1

He should get a medal, and a battle axe with which to finish the job Or at least he would in a justice oriented society But the West is ruled by communists who revel in anarchotyranny, so the citizen will be punished by the state for defending his daughter and the migrant criminal who abused a little girl will face no consequences

@DanHollaway @peterboghossian It literally does. Not sure if you understand what is meant by that phrase though. It's just saying in a violent conflict, the default is to the state is right. Think of when a person pulls a weapon on an officer. By law, the officer has the right to use violence.

@farmercate2 @aaronsmith @corybernardi Aaron will say anything that fits his ideology. And yet somehow not a single recent migrant is dying of starvation even if they don’t have a job. No one is turned away from a public hospital if they’re sick. Then they’ll turn around and say that we should be generous to all.

“The teeming hordes of people who come here for welfare.” I wouldn't call it racist as much as I'd call it a lie. @corybernardi is a liar. The 'hordes' he’s talking about are not entitled to welfare. Cory is welcome to prove me wrong, but he won’t - because he can’t.

@Heccles94 The unions exist to pay the salaries and bills of union officials. They’re not truly worker bodies anymore. During Covid not a single union in Australia stood up for the bodily autonomy of their workers. They all accepted mandates by employers to inject workers with vaccines.

@1Alboforpm @BatmansBedroom Kurnell and Bulwer Island were announced in 2012 under Labor. It takes a while to shut down a refinery. Nothing much Abbott could really do about it in his first year.

@1Alboforpm Basically we are outbidding poor people somewhere else using our power and privilege to exploit the poor elsewhere. But you don’t care when it solves a political perception problem for you. Frankly, it’s nationalistic and that makes you a national socialist, yes?

@RizviAbul Hmmm. NET migration…? Are more people leaving Australia or are fewer arriving? If 10 million arrive but 9.7 million leave that’s 300k. Would change the country a fair bit though!

This from IPA is designed to suggest net migration in 12 months to Jan26 was over 490k. It wasn’t. Likely to be around 300k to 330k. In other words over 150k less than IPA is peddling. But Hanson et al are now using this to mislead voters. ipa.org.au/latest-news/re…

As we mark the end of Daylight Saving for another financial year, some of you may note that it is a perverse irony that when daylight is less available we no longer try to save it. Clearly the government must be involved. The market would never create such distortions by itself.

@QuentinDempster “Gives nothing back”? We live under the blanket of US military protection. Do you expect US troops to provide us with free security? To potentially die keeping our sea lanes open because we refuse to pay for a Navy of our own that could do it. You take too much for granted.

Trump’s idea of free trade? Like a pirate, he wants to take all he and his oligarchs can get and give nothing back. Although Australians are a lucrative market for US AI tech, video streaming and pharmaceuticals, the Yanks want to destroy our PBS & predate on Copyright creators.
