@thelightdiet @Jamieone80 Most LED bulbs burn out long before their stated shelf life because theyre not rated for enclosed fixtures. Thats by design so that you still have to buy new ones frequently. No one checks the rating or seems to be aware of it.

LUMIOS, the world’s first human-friendly LED, launches tomorrow, April 14th. Years of development and decades of LED technology advancement bring us to the first ever LED optimized for lighting quality and biological well-being, not just efficiency and brightness. raoptics.com/lumios for first access. @ra_optics

@thelightdiet @Jamieone80 If you buy 130v incandescent bulbs instead of 110v they last a LONG time. I have been running several of those in my house constantly for years and years without them burning out. Look into Phoebus cartel.

Honestly that could be a great move. Just that they last 1000 hours and ours last 25,000 hours We still have all the key wavelengths for biological benefits Incandescent bulbs will still create a lot of heat to increase your air-conditioning bill So you have to replace them 25 times more, pay more for AC and run it more often to keep the place cool if you have a lot of bulbs running, and there is still more flicker from an incandescent bulb than ours. But honestly it’s a very good solution either way. No standard conventional LEDs compare.

Bro what? Incandescent flicker is a smooth sine wave — the filament never fully cools off making it soft on the eyes so its not even a comparison. LEDs can never match that as they are either in a on or off state for PWM driven ones + phosphor known to cause eyestrain. LEDs also emit spatially non-uniform light, unlike incandescent. Incandescents also are IR/Red light rich. You can still find them in the US in stores and even on ebay/amazon. Them running hotter is fine as its a more premium light output that is healthier for us.

Actually you can’t in most US states and all of Europe. Good idea otherwise bro! 🤪 And they flicker bro, more than our bulbs! Unless you have 12V DC reflector with a specific type of converter, which no one does And they’re hot and use a lot more electricity producing heat which is undesirable

I posted last week about a number of my 30 something-year-old friends who have been diagnosed with rare aggressive cancers, or have died suddenly. I found out today a coworker of mine who is 39 died just this weekend. Sudden.. no signs… What the hell is going on?

My greatest fear around going a year w/o screens was being left behind during the singularity The LLMs have made me vastly more capable, and that only continues That’s why building the screenless phone with agentic abilities was essential. I will always have the latest version of Claude

@daviddorg Probably from the lack of violet light in the color spectrum of the led backlights. I'm pretty sure the older ccfl and crt displays emitted some violet light which is now not present with modern displays. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC52…

CRAZY - About half of US adults are nearsighted now. In 1970 it was only 25% A 2025 analysis of 335,000 people found each hour of daily screen time raises your risk by 21% I have mild nearsightedness and am getting my vision tested soon before going a year without screens I have no idea if it will improve, but I hope so

Ever since around 2020 I've had serious issues with screen use causing debilitating symptoms — both visual and cognitive — that would clear up completely when I stopped using screens. I now use only e-ink displays because of it, with OLED only occasionally when I need color. This seems to be a growing problem. I run r/ScreenSensitive for people with similar experiences, and there are other communities like r/PWM_Sensitivity and Ledstrain.org. I think these displays are resetting our baseline — how our eyes perceive color and light — due to their unnaturally vibrant and artificial output. Interesting related research: pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC82…

I have bad news about the year without screens experiment — Year Unplugged It blew up way faster than expected: + 0 to 156k on Instagram in about 3 weeks + 2k to 17k on X in about 2 weeks I guess we all want to know how the screens and devices may be affecting us, even if it's just one person Anyway, there has been a lot of attention, a lot of ideas about what I should measure, and even some unexpected help (thank you all) Originally, I was just going to measure blood markers (@superpower), sleep data (@ouraring), neuroimaging, cognitive tests, and a few other things But given all the new ideas and that this will be an entire year of my life, I'm adding some more things: + Gut health, with help from @superpower (tiny) and @ThroneScience (cool product for daily tracking) + Full-body MRI + skeletal assessment + body composition, with help from @function + Some questionnaires like MAIA-2: Interoception, to see if body awareness changes a lot + DUTCH test for more in-depth view of hormones (cc @AbudBakri) + Potentially sperm health (shoutout @sciencekelso) Anyway, here's the bad news: Instead of starting the screenless phase on April 5th, I need to extend the baseline phase a bit to gather the rest of this data and make sure everything is set up right I'll let you know as soon as the date is firm, and of course all the baseline data will continue getting uploaded to the live dashboard LAST CALL: If there's anything you'd like to see someone measure before / during / after going a year without screens, speak now or forever hold your peace Otherwise, thank you for being here. I'm excited to see what we may discover.

Also worth measuring axial length — lack of UV from screen backlights contributes to axial elongation (myopia), since UV triggers EGR1 expression in the retina and stimulates dopamine release, both of which suppress eye growth. When I went nearly a year without screens my vision cleared up significantly, and I think this was part of it.

You can never have a sound sleep in a high RF environment Because how do you expect your brain to rest when it’s busy dodging invisible modulated man-made RF radiation all night? Start with your cellphone off and in another room, WiFi router unplugged, No electronic watch/clock/items in the bedroom, non-metallic bed 2 meters from the walls. Make your bedroom a dead zone for technology. You don’t need none of that tech while sleeping.

@daviddorg Bro I've took 8+ months off from screens and I can't begin to tell you how amazing you'll feel. Never knew I could reach that level of feeling good. I relied only on apple watch siri to call/text and for Siri to read the texts, emails and other notis. Good luck 🙏

@ze_rusty It's crazy how the displays on old phones like the galaxy s2 was 250ish nits and here new phones are pushing 3000 nits. Absolutely eye searing! We pretty much slowly gotten use to more and more brightness with super vivid unnatural colors throwing our eyes off which is the "norm"

@PragmaticNurse The big thing with Lasik is that it can cause corneal neuralgia which causes severe pain and discomfort. I heard it can cause your face and teeth to hurt. I know someone with it, they get triggered by certain light and such. It's horrible
