Mormons are not Christians, sorry.
sheriece@sheriece

@TheModerateCase I hope you apply this to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as well. They are professed Christians who believe in every tenant you just named. It is ridiculous that so many fellow Christians treat them so terribly.

All this hate for evangelicals when, statistically, we are the only bloc consistently holding it down for biblical marriage, the pro-life cause, secure borders, and every other issue. We are by far the most conservative and united in every political, cultural, and moral area. This is not statistically contested. Without the strength and cohesion of this group, conservatives lose everything. Consequently, the country loses everything. Not an exaggeration. So ask yourself: why would someone want to divide, destroy, and demoralize this stalwart group? The answer is obvious if the person is progressive, but it becomes a bit murky when the people targeting this group are on the “right,” right? Something to ponder

I. Logical Issues 1. False Dichotomy: “Private vs. Public Revelation” Claim structure (implicit): P1: Private revelations are unreliable. P2: Joseph Smith’s claims are private. P3: The resurrection is public (many witnesses). C: Therefore, the resurrection is credible, Joseph Smith is not. Problem: This creates a false dichotomy. Why it fails: Early Christianity itself begins with private experiences: - Paul’s vision (Acts 9) — not publicly witnessed - John’s Revelation — entirely private Even resurrection appearances are: - Not uniformly public (e.g., to Mary Magdalene, the apostles behind closed doors) Conclusion: The argument is internally inconsistent: It uses a standard that, if applied consistently, would undermine parts of the New Testament itself. 2. Strawman of LDS Claims Statement: “No one else saw the angel, no one else saw the plates.” Problem: This is factually and logically inaccurate. Counter-evidence: - Three Witnesses: testified to seeing the plates and an angel - Eight Witnesses: testified to physically handling the plates You may dispute their credibility, but you cannot claim they don’t exist. Fallacy: - Strawman (misrepresenting the claim) - Suppressed evidence 3. Inconsistent Epistemic Standard The speaker argues: - Christianity = multiple witnesses → credible - Joseph Smith = private → not credible But then allows: - Ancient testimony (NT) = reliable - Modern testimony (LDS witnesses) = dismissed This creates: Special Pleading Same type of evidence (testimony) is accepted in one case and rejected in another without a principled distinction. 4. Non Sequitur: Martyrdom as Truth Indicator Structure: P1: Apostles died for what they saw C: Therefore, what they saw is true Problem: This is invalid. Correct logical relationship: - Martyrdom → sincerity - NOT → truth Counterexample: - People from many religions die for false beliefs Conclusion: At best, martyrdom establishes belief, not truth. 5. Genetic Fallacy / Ad Hominem Framing Statements like: - “magic rock in a hat” - comparisons to Muhammad and demonic influence These function rhetorically to poison the well, not to analyze truth claims. Logical issue: - Attacking origin or framing instead of evaluating the claim itself 6. Category Error: “Public Miracles” The argument assumes: Public = verifiable in a modern empirical sense But: - All ancient events (including the resurrection) come through testimony, not direct observation by us. So both claims (resurrection and Book of Mormon origins) are: mediated historical testimony Conclusion: The distinction is overstated and philosophically naive. II. Historical Issues 1. Incorrect Claim: “No Evidence / No Witnesses” As noted: - There are documented witnesses to the plates - Their statements are part of the historical record Rejecting them is one thing Ignoring them is another 2. Oversimplified Martyrdom Narrative The speaker implies: Early Christians died purely for eyewitness claims Historically: - Many martyrdom accounts are: -Later traditions - Theologically shaped narratives - Not all apostles’ deaths are well-attested historically Example: - We lack strong historical documentation for several apostolic martyrdoms 3. Selective Use of Galatians 1 “Even if an angel…” This is used as a filter against Joseph Smith. Logical issue: This assumes what must be proven: Hidden premise: - Paul’s gospel is already the final standard Thus: - The argument becomes circular 4. Anachronistic Standard of Evidence The critique demands: - Physical artifacts - Public verification But: - Christianity itself does not meet modern evidentiary standards - No surviving physical evidence of resurrection - Reliance on textual testimony Conclusion: The standard is applied asymmetrically.

@PrudentThinquer @Seth_1 I’m not even LDS, I’m coming from agnostic athiesm and still trying to find a place with my faith - this is a silly. LDS do not claim Joseph Smith to be equal to Jesus Christ; A relationship with Christ is not limited by geography, time period, or knowledge of a specific prophet.

@Seth_1 I agree with everything you said except for your first four words. Can you have a relationship with Jesus apart from Smith?

@Grownded @Virgini23166650 @LonghornJoker Would that mean that those in heaven/the angels are technically “God” as well? Or do you not believe the angels are in “perfect unity” with the Father? If they are all “God” what differentiates the Father from the others? (Genuine question as somebody exploring the church)

@Virgini23166650 @LonghornJoker This is my position. Being God (capital G) is being in perfect unity with the Father, who is God. Jesus Christ, and ostensibly the Spirit, are in perfect unity with Him from eternity, a condition we have not been, and require the interposition of a Messiah to accomplish.

And is that one God or three gods? Again, no official answer. Joseph in the Sermon in the Grove said 3 gods. Other presidents have too. Other general authorities and philosophers see the standment as a form of monotheism. If both are acceptable answers, the church has no position.
PapaGringo@olgringoHancock

@LonghornJoker Sigh. There is so an official position on this. We believe in God the Eternal Father, and in His Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost.

“But his head was wrapped in a different cloth!” Yes it was. We actually have that too, it’s known as the Sudarium of Oviedo and and it aligns perfectly with the Shroud. We also have historical records of it going back hundreds of years before the Shroud, further debunking claims that it was forged in the 1300-1400’s. Even the blood type is the same (AB, an incredibly rare blood type to boot) which would have been impossible to know by any medieval forger.

It’s genuinely mind boggling to me that we literally have the shroud JESUS CHRIST himself was wrapped in when he was put in the tomb for three days, that has his whole body and even blood engraved on it for all to see… And most Christian’s don’t even know it exists.

@OzarkRequiem @NadanHosea @ThoughtfulSaint To me, it seems to mark a shift rather than an end. Before John the message pointed forward; after John the Kingdom is preached. It also seems like prophets continue in Acts, and the Law isn’t simply ended either but fulfilled and its role changed.

Them: God is not like anything that actually exists. Literally The Bible: 🔹 Exodus 33:11 “The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend.”
Daniel Ortner@dortner1

@ThoughtfulSaint If pressed literally enough, sure. God is not exactly like anything in nature and that shouldn't surprise us. Analogies are still helpful tools for expanding our imagination. I recommend my series on echoes of the Trinity: boastinginchristalone.wordpress.com/2025/06/22/ech…

@OzarkRequiem @NadanHosea @ThoughtfulSaint A few replies ago you were asking for explicit verses - now you’re saying the Bible doesn’t have to explicitly say something (I agree.) But if we’re both inferring, then why assume the Spirit replaces prophets when the NT shows it working through them? Where does that change?

@RylSnt @NadanHosea @ThoughtfulSaint God consistently in a pattern enslaved his people to foreign nations. The Bible doesn't have to explicitly state something lol, we don't hold to sola scriptura. In these last days he sent his son, the greatest of the prophets. The Holy Ghost guides the church now
