Everyone knows by know that Block cut 40% of their workforce just to watch their stock jump over 20%.
Here's what I think will happen:
This reminds me of X/Twitter when Elon laid off 80% of his staff.
If 1-2 other tech companies do this, it might trigger a trend where more tech companies try to eliminate a giant chunk of staff at once.
With Block being rewarded by Wall Street this much, you just know every CEO/CFO/CTO is talking about this today.
That being said, I doubt other non-tech companies (think banking, insurance, healthcare etc) end up doing this. Now they may continue layoffs, but more gradually, vs 40% in one shot.
What I do know is that tech is a copy cat league.
If 2-3 more tech companies pull this trigger in the next 90 days, it becomes a trend where more will follow.
