#2000dayTigrayGenocide The conflict in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, which began on **November 4, 2020**, was one of the deadliest and most devastating wars of the 21st century. It lasted for roughly two years until a formal truce was signed in November 2022, though its effects continue to define life in the region today. ### The Spark: November 4, 2020 The war was the climax of long-standing political tensions between the federal government of Ethiopia, led by **Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed**, and the **Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF)**, the governing party of the Tigray region. * **The Catalyst:** On the night of November 3–4, the federal government accused the TPLF of attacking the **Northern Command**, a major federal military base in Tigray. * **The Response:** Abiy Ahmed declared a state of emergency and launched a "Law Enforcement Operation," sending the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) into Tigray. * **The Escalation:** What was promised to be a short operation quickly escalated into a full-scale civil war involving neighboring **Eritrea** (siding with the Ethiopian government) and regional militias from the Amhara and Afar regions. ### Human Impact and Atrocities The war was marked by extreme humanitarian suffering and allegations of systemic violence. Many international observers, human rights organizations, and survivors have used the term **genocidal** to describe the nature of the violence. * **Casualties:** While exact figures are hard to confirm due to communications blackouts, researchers and experts estimate that between **100,000 and 600,000 people** died from combat, starvation, and lack of medical care. * **Massacres:** Notable massacres occurred in towns like **Mai Kadra**, **Axum**, and **Mahbere Dego**, where hundreds of civilians were killed. * **Sexual Violence:** Human rights groups documented widespread and systematic sexual violence. Reports indicated that thousands of women were subjected to horrific acts by various armed groups, often as a tool of war. * **Displacement:** Nearly **3 million people** were internally displaced, and tens of thousands fled across the border into Sudan. ### The Siege and Famine For much of the conflict, the Tigray region was under a "de facto blockade." * **Blockade:** Essential services—including electricity, banking, telecommunications, and the internet—were cut off for nearly two years. * **Humanitarian Crisis:** Food and medicine were prevented from entering the region at the scale needed. This led to widespread famine, with the UN estimating that over **5 million people** were in urgent need of food aid. * **Destruction:** Schools, hospitals, and factories were looted or destroyed, dismantling the region’s infrastructure. ### The Road to Peace The active "hot war" phase officially ended with the **Pretoria Agreement** (the Permanent Cessation of Hostilities Agreement) signed in South Africa on **November 2, 2022**. While the agreement brought an end to most large-scale fighting and began the restoration of some services, the recovery process has been slow. Many areas remain in ruins, and the trauma of the "2000 days" (and counting) of crisis remains a heavy burden for the Tigrayan people. It’s a deeply heavy piece of history. Is there a specific aspect of the timeline or the humanitarian situation you’re looking into? @UNHumanRights @StateDept @UN_Women @UN @HumanRightsCtte @EU_Commission @GenocideAPPG @BerhanuAsres #Justice4TigrayGenocide

Day 1989 of the #TigrayGenocide: Despite its unparalleled scale, the #WarOnTigray remained largely invisible to the world. Factors such as race & the peripherality of the region made the #Tigray conflict a blind spot in global geopolitics. #Justice4Tigray #TigrayIsSuffering

Day 1988 of the #TigrayGenocide: Nowhere is this reality more immediate and devastating than in #Tigray. The war has not really ended. Only the sounds of guns and drones have fallen silent. The conflict continues in slower, quieter, and equally lethal forms. #Justice4Tigray

Day 1991 of the #TigrayGenocide: The occupation of #Tigray's territories persists. Hundreds of thousands of displaced #Tigrayans remain in makeshift camps because core issues—the removal of unlawful settlers, and security guarantees—remain unresolved. #AmharaOutOfTigray

Day 1984 of the #TigrayGenocide: Genocide begins with hatred, discrimination, dehumanization. Ignored warnings in #Rwanda → 1M+ dead. The same warning signs are visible today in #Tigray & Western #Sudan. #Justice4Tigray @IntlCrimCourt @UNHumanRights @UN

Rape was used not as a consequence of war—but as a strategy of genocide in Tigray. It targeted wombs to erase a people. This isn’t “conflict-related sexual violence.” This is genocide by design. Call it by its name. #NameItGenocide @IntlCrimCourt @UN_HRC @martinplaut

Subject: Urgent Appeal for Support to Restore Education in Tigray Dear @UNICEFEthiopia @_AfricanUnion @AJEnglish @EU_UNGeneva @BBCWorld @SecMarcosR5215 @cnni @antonioguterres @UNESCO @WhiteHouse @HouseForeign @ymahmoudali @BettyMcCollum04 I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to bring to your attention the critical situation currently facing the education system in Tigray. The Tigray Education Bureau (TEB) has expressed grave concerns about the severe danger confronting our education sector due to the Ethiopian federal government's refusal to release the allocated budget for Tigray. Dr. Kiros Goosh, Head of the Tigray Education Bureau, emphasized that this withholding of funds undermines the principles of constitutional equality and fiscal federalism. It also contradicts the commitments outlined in the Pretoria Agreement regarding post-conflict recovery and service delivery. The repercussions have been devastating: schools in Tigray were shuttered for over three and a half years, first due to the coronavirus pandemic and subsequently because of the conflict. This closure resulted in significant disruptions to students' education, substantial damage to educational infrastructure, and deep social and psychological harm to both teachers and students. Thanks to the vital support from international partners, schools under the Tigray Provisional Administration have recently reopened, with efforts underway to replenish educational materials and resume services. However, the federal government's continued denial of the constitutionally mandated budget threatens to undo these hard-won gains and jeopardizes the future of thousands of students. In an open letter addressed to the Ministry of Education and the Disaster Preparedness Commission, the Tigray Education Bureau has called for an immediate resolution to the budget crisis. They have also urged the international community to provide urgent financial assistance and apply diplomatic pressure on the federal government to promptly release the full budget allocated to Tigray. I join the TEB in urging our international partners to respond swiftly and decisively to this crisis. The children and educators of Tigray deserve the opportunity to rebuild and thrive, free from the constraints imposed by political neglect. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I am hopeful that with your support, we can help restore stability and hope to the education sector in Tigray. #TigrayCrisis @ #TigrayCantWait Sincerely, @BerhanuAsres
