Science Committee Democrats

Cutting American science and research is not a good idea--it's dangerous. When we know less, we are less prepared for the next threat. Most are in agreement; science can save lives. So why does the president continue to risk our safety?

Yesterday, I spoke on the House floor to recognize the bipartisan effort to recognize May 20th as National Women in Aerospace Day. May 20th marks the anniversary of Amelia Earhart’s historic transatlantic flight—a moment that serves as a reminder of the women who made history, and an inspiration to the women and girls who will shape the future of aerospace. As the Ranking Member of Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee, I am proud to help lead this resolution and will continue to fight to ensure women are properly recognized for their contributions to our nation.

With wildfires already ablaze across Southern California, I passed an amendment to bring greater federal investment into wildfire research. Wildfires are a real, present threat that require a comprehensive, advanced response. We can do that by improving our sensing and prevention measures.

Today, we are finally seeing rail safety legislation considered in Congress! This is a big first step, but it's just that - a first step. There is still more that Congress must do to ensure another disaster like what we saw in East Palestine never happens again.

From electric vehicles to advanced cybersecurity tools, we need to make sure American workers are prepared for the technologies shaping the future of transit. I’m pushing the Federal Transit Administration to invest in workforce training, collaborate with local universities, and build a talent pipeline that makes sure our rural transit systems in Upstate New York don’t get left behind.

Today the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology advanced my bipartisan Water Power Research and Development Reauthorization Act to enhance marine energy and hydropower technologies and strengthen the electric grid. Waves, tides, and currents could power tens of millions of homes. As extreme weather worsens and electric costs surge, it’s past time we invest in affordable, clean energy to keep communities resilient. I hope this bill comes to the House floor for a vote soon.

I’m grateful that the Science committee passed my amendment to strengthen U.S. leadership in next-generation transit technologies. Fuel cell and electrified transit, safety upgrades, and modern bus fleets will reduce pollution, lower costs, and support manufacturing jobs. Passengers, transit operators, and emergency planners should have confidence that their commutes will be safe safer, cleaner, and more affordable.  @sciencedems

Last year the president took a sledgehammer to critical government programs in the name of cutting costs. Democrats warned that there would be dire consequences and Americans would be less safe due to his administration’s recklessness. This is what we were talking about. (Thread)

Congratulations again to the Artemis II astronauts on a successful mission, and thank you for inspiring us to shoot for the stars. As a proud member of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, I will continue working to ensure our nation leads the way in space travel.

I also had the opportunity to present @NCSSM alum @Astro_Christina with my resolution designating May 20th as National Women in Aerospace Day which recognizes the work of trailblazing women throughout history, including Dr. Koch. The barriers Dr. Koch continues to break is an important reminder to women around the world that we too can make lasting change and deserve the opportunity to do so.

I had the opportunity to meet with the Artemis II astronauts at the U.S. Capitol this week with the @ScienceDems Committee! It was great to celebrate their historic mission, traveling farther into deep space than humankind has ever gone before. This was an incredibly exciting moment and their journey into space continues to be an inspiration for so many back home!

I was grateful for the opportunity to greet the Artemis II crew here in Washington. They have inspired a generation, and as Ranking Member of the Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee, I won’t stop defending NASA funding to ensure we can continue pushing our space program forward.
