With the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, Americans instinctively focus on oil. But the conflict in Iran has also exposed the United States’ dependence on imports of military grade aluminum, primarily sourced from the Middle East. Executive Director of SAFE’s Center for Strategic Industrial Materials, Joe Quinn, identifies similarities between the oil and aluminum supply disruptions, and what’s required of the U.S. to boost domestic aluminum production. ⬇️ thefuse.org/straitofhormuz…

High domestic oil production has had undeniable benefits, but the U.S. cannot be complacent on energy security. It’s more urgent than ever to reduce oil vulnerabilities, strengthen supply chain resilience, and diversify the energy mix to prevent oil from being used as a geopolitical weapon.

What hasn’t: 🔴The U.S. remains tethered to the global oil market and exposed to price volatility 🔴 Energy security is inextricably linked to national security

“As the simulation ends, the Dow is down 700 points, oil is at $160 a barrel, gasoline is at $5.50 a gallon….” Past is prologue. In 2007, SAFE wargamed a closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Here was the coverage on Fox News:

An industry-led approach could help address the “lack of commercial stockpiles, the lack of readiness of major manufacturers who are leveraging just-in-time manufacturing in the worst case scenario.” Abigail Hunter, Executive Director of SAFE’s Center for Critical Minerals Strategy, spoke with @POLITICO @HMNorthey on Project Vault: subscriber.politicopro.com/article/eenews…

Earlier this year, a United Nations working party proposed a global regulation to facilitate the introduction of self-driving vehicles worldwide. With the vote on the regulation set for June 2026, @NHTSAgov accepted public comments to help inform the United States’ position. SAFE’s @CoalitionReMo provided feedback. We urge NHTSA to prioritize cybersecurity, data governance, and supply chain security so that no provision in the GTR allows data to be easily accessed and be used to compromise the security interests of the U.S. and its allies.

African nations could play a more decisive role in the future of global critical mineral supply chains, SAFE's Abigail Hunter told @channelafrica1 during the recent #MiningIndaba2026. They have a real opportunity to move beyond raw exports and to scale operations like refining and processing to unlock further economic growth. The key will be transparent partnerships and reliable, affordable electricity to power those expanded operations. channelafrica.co.za/channelafrica/…

The energy, transportation, automotive, construction, and aerospace sectors all use aluminum. Yet, the U.S. imports the majority of the raw materials needed for primary aluminum production—exposing it to global market disruptions, trade restrictions, and reliance on foreign resources. A solution? More recycling.

Last Friday at the @MunSecConf, SAFE and the European Initiative for Energy Security gathered representatives from NATO and Allied governments, as well as leaders from the defense and minerals sectors, to assess how the Alliance can best leverage the increased 1.5% of GDP in defense-related spending to secure critical minerals supply chains. Careful investment and alignment with ongoing efforts by the EU, Allied nations, and Asian partners will be key for NATO in maximizing the impact of their resources. #MSC2026

“We cannot build the drone systems of the future with regulatory frameworks designed for the past,” - @averyaash, SAFE's CEO. Commercial drones are already improving how the U.S. inspects power lines, protects crops, responds to emergencies, and moves critical medical supplies—but most high-value uses remain limited by outdated flight rules.
