There are definitely caste problems, and that is the reason India has anti-discrimination laws and quotas related to caste. But its also the case that is not as ubiquitous as you may think. For a lot of people, its a topic that never comes up. So from that point of view, caste is irrelevant to someone new to Hinduism. Nobody asks Julia Roberts what caste she is.
