Sooner or later Carney is going to have to answer some heated questions about MP Ma, like “why is a communist Chinese agent who denies slave labour, still sitting in his caucus?” This isn’t just going away; Ma’s apology doesn’t acknowledge that there IS slave labour in China.

How is the liberal party going to recover from this?

There has been extensive documentation of Uyghur enforced labour in the aluminum and car production industries in China for many years by many different bodies, including Human Rights Watch, the United States State Department and the parliaments of Canada and the Netherlands, the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United Nations Human Rights Council and the Third Committee, the human rights arm of the UN General Assembly. What’s more, Human Rights Watch has defined China’s persecution of the Uyghurs as going way beyond enforced labour, to committing crimes against humanity against the Uyghurs, including “imprisonment or other deprivation of liberty in violation of international law; persecution of an identifiable ethnic or religious group; enforced disappearance; torture; murder; and alleged inhumane acts intentionally causing great suffering or serious injury to mental or physical health, notably forced labor and sexual violence.” And this has extended even to Uyghur children, “whose parents have been arbitrarily detained are placed in state institutions such as orphanages and boarding schools, including boarding preschools.” Are these the monstrous acts Michael Ma & Mark Carney would have us support with Ma’s dismissal of the serious charges of enforced labour against China? As mentioned, Mark Carney has his own history with slave labour. During Carney’s leadership at Brookfield, from 2020 to 2024, Brookfield faced reports of serious human rights abuses in Brazil. From 2012 to 2021 eight farms owned by Brookfield in the Cerrado region in Brazil, an area of forest the size of 11,000 football pitches was cleared for soybean production. A Brookfield-controlled company was subsequently fined $800,000 for slave labour offences at one of these farms, in a ruling by a regional labour court in December 2021. Are these the “values” Mark Carney is encouraging in Canada? Enforced labour, slave labour, and industry benefiting from crimes against humanity? If so, how long before Canada becomes communist China?
