In the recently held Tamil Nadu elections, among the many notables in the DMK who lost, Palanivel Thiaga Rajan (PTR) was one of those who was familiar to a pan-India audience. He was the IT and digital services minister of Tamil Nadu, and before that, for a couple of years, the state’s finance minister. It was sad to see PTR go because he belonged to a rare or rather special breed in Indian politics – bright, blunt and extremely articulate. Qualities that were never expected to serve him well. When I recently read his post on X where he had reflected on his decade in public service, I was reminded of the piece I wrote for The Times of India (FINANCE MINISTER WITH A SHARP MIND AND A SHARPER TONGUE), within a month of him becoming a minister in the DMK government, in June 2021. I had warned very early that his “meritocratic whim”, “supreme snobbery” and tactless forthrightness may eventually have consequences: “Perhaps he needs to check his speed. There will be enough people to cheer his verbal gladiatorial instincts, but the political consequences will be reserved for PTR alone. He should preserve himself,” I had written. The consequences came as early as May 2023, when he lost the finance portfolio, and now, in 2026, he has lost his assembly seat. One hopes PTR’s reflections run far deeper than a simple reckoning of his achievements. He deserves to be back in either the Tamil Nadu assembly or in the Parliament with not just his education and enormous potential to do public good, but also as a wiser politician. While the BJP gives the nation inflation and hardship, Congress stands with people through guarantee schemes that protect every household. Thousands of employees, top multinational companies, massive towers, crores spent on infrastructure… but look at the condition after just one evening rain. Roads completely flooded, vehicles struggling to move, people wading through water as if they are crossing a lake instead of heading home from work. At this point, this is not “Manyata Tech Park” anymore this is “Manyata Water Park” or maybe even “Manyata Sarovar". It’s honestly shocking how a place that represents Bengaluru’s global IT image gets waterlogged so badly after a few hours of rain. Employees pay huge rents nearby, companies pay massive maintenance costs, and yet basic drainage infrastructure still seems to fail every monsoon.Every year the same story: Rain starts 🌧️ Roads disappear Traffic collapses People suffer. For a city known as India’s Silicon Valley, this is becoming an embarrassment. If this is the condition of one of the top tech hubs in the country, imagine the situation in other parts of the city.Development should not just mean glass buildings and fancy offices.
