Now confirmed August 2025 had the lowest boat crossings since 2019, and the fewest migrants on them since 2021. After a rough first half to the year, things could be turning round. Governments "one in one out" trial with France started at the beginning of August.

6 more days to go in August, and it's looking like small boat crossings for the month are going to be the LOWEST since 2019. 2025: 40 2024: 76 2023: 102 2022: 192 2021: 99 2020: 116 Source: migrationwatchuk.org/channel-crossi…

Labour are backtracking on a plan to help save birds: by blocking a new rule that would make developers put a £35 nest brick in every new home. They think it'll help win them votes - we need to show it would do the opposite. Sign the petition 38d.gs/zcpv

I know lots (and LOTS) of people who debunk the claim that: "X% of the jobs our students will get don't currenty exist." Does anyone know of serious, thoughtful support for that claim? (I doubt such suppport exists -- but I thought I'd ask.)

@AnnabelDenham1 Agree with the first point. However, the industrial revolution led to mass migration, unskilled labour, exploitation of the masses and urban slums. The IV tech rev left tens of '000's unskilled and unemployed. Some sort of parallel prep/planning would be good!

The industrial revolution didn’t happen because Britain had an industrial strategy. The computer revolution of the 1980s didn’t happen because tech entrepreneurs sat around talking about it with officials in Washington. This might be well intentioned. It’s also pointless.

@tombennett71 I can’t disagree and inevitably the time used increases the % of ‘invisible’ students who staff don’t have time for, some of whom then act out to get attention. That is why resources & time need to be allocated to the challenging ones.

I have long remarked that every piece of school behaviour research I see usually focusses on the excluded/ suspended child, but almost never focusses on the impact on children affected by the misbehaviour of others. Which is a terrible omission considering how vastly one group outnumbers the other.
Andrew Old@oldandrewuk

It's accepted that the worst-behaved children and the most selfish and incapable parents soak up a huge proportion of schools' time and resources. However, nobody ever really analyses how much worse this makes school for the average child.

@henrymoeranBBC Ah - Henry - this isn't detailed enough. You need a value ratio based on length of run-up of bowler, time in the air of the ball before the bat and speed of the bowler returning to the crease!

On the £175 tickets at Lord's for the India Test next summer. Assuming most days see 80 overs, that's £2.18 an over or 36p a ball. Or if we really want to get into the economics, 1 pack of Parma Violets per delivery.
