$PL, $BKSY, $SPIR, $SATL. Earth Observation (EO) is critically important for national defense - especially during wartime. Crowded market but there are very clear differences between all of these companies. Let's break it down at a high level: $PL - think of them as the "Global Library." They operate a massive "flock" of 200+ satellites (Doves) that scan the entire Earth's landmass every single day. And because they scan everything, they have a "Time Machine" of data. Key Customers: Defense & Intelligence, but also other verticals like Agriculture & ESG. $BKSY - let's think of them as the "Live Feed" of the planet. They operate a swarm of small satellites that prioritize revisit rate over global coverage. They aren't trying to take a picture of every tree on Earth. They want to take a picture of that specific airstrip 15 times a day. Key customers: Defense & Intelligence customers. $SPIR (Spire Global) – think of them as the "Radio Station." Unlike the others, Spire doesn't focus on pictures (optical imagery). They focus on Radio Frequency (RF) and Radio Occultation. They track AIS (ships), ADS-B (planes), and weather patterns by listening to signals. They can "see" a ship through the thickest storm clouds or track a plane over the middle of the ocean where radar doesn't reach. Key customers: Maritime logistics, Aviation, and Weather agencies. $SATL (Satellogic) - this company is the "Discount EO" play. Their goal is to have a constellation so large they can remap the entire world in high-res every week at a fraction of the cost. They claim to have the lowest cost-per-satellite in the industry (under $1M in-orbit) and are the "budget-friendly" alternative for high-resolution 0.7m (moving to 0.3m) imagery. Key customers: Defense & Intelligence. There's also many other private companies like Maxar, Synspective, and many others in this EO space. Super interesting space to watch, especially as AI continues to be layered in for real-time decisions/insights. What's your favorite pick in EO?
