A fighter pilot? Capt Joseph Emerson sat in cockpit jump seat, tried to turn off fuel to both engines at 29,000 feet, 48 hours after taking psilocybin. We are marching in dangerous terrain, with yet another hyped “magic bullet” that can destroy as unpredictably as it can help.

As the war on drugs approaches its end, a new doctrine could soon take hold: psychedelic drugs for active-duty soldiers suffering from PTSD. 'Our men and women in uniform deserve every tool available to heal and stay in the fight.' Latest for @guardian theguardian.com/us-news/2026/a…

A new paper takes a closer look at how ketamine works in the brain, and whether its different effects can be separated. Researchers compared ketamine given to people who were awake versus under general anesthesia, tracking brain activity with EEG.

I'm looking for a post-bac research assistant to help run our studies on the impact of psychedelics on memory! Preferably with an interest in cognitive neuroscience (not just psychedelics or clinical research) and knowledge of coding/data analysis. utaustin.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/UTstaff/job/UT…

Imagine being in a magic mushroom study, and you get the placebo. Womp womp. This leads to what researchers are now calling the "knowcebo" effect. This wipes out the impact of placebo controls in these studies. @psybalazs : podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cog…

In a sane world, this study would be seen as a signal to learn more- not as the primary basis for a massive shift in policy. I’ll say though, it rly does take an EO that would make it possible to study Ibogaine in the US- the FDA has taken a zero-risk approach, trials are expensive and slow as a result

@TheBorisLab A different take on what you are saying. Look at what the people who got open label ibogaine study (that did not include everyone who got ibogaine btw). If you want people to get better on ibogaine, fund trips to Mexico & Stanford, give them massages, etc. x.com/RecoveryDoctor…
Michael Ostacher, MD, MPH@RecoveryDoctor

@cremieuxrecueil It’s even more concerning with regard to interpreting subjective data with no control. Have a look at the methods for the people in the study. Not only did they get three trips to The Farm, they got all these other activities and interventions — and had all their travel paid for.

Dead on. Step 1 to understanding what Ibogaine and psychedelics can do is easing regs and promoting science. I hope the same enthusiasm extends to creating and sustaining the social and psychological supports needed to “scale”

America is in the middle of a mental health crisis. Half of all Americans will experience a mental or behavioral health condition, with even higher rates among veterans. Yet medical professionals still lack the objective tools needed to determine what treatments work and for whom. Too many patients are left cycling through care without clear answers. ARPA-H’s EVIDENT program is working to change that by developing new ways to measure treatment effectiveness and evaluate emerging therapies, including psychedelics. Thank you @POTUS @WhiteHouse and @SecKennedy for elevating this as a national priority through Saturday’s executive order to accelerate medical treatments for serious mental illness. ARPA-H was built to take on challenges like this and deliver Americans transformative care at rapid speed. arpa-h.gov/news-and-event…

Larger sample sizes. More psychedelically naive patients. More long term follow up. More complete and honest reporting of adverse effects. More careful blinding. More transparent consent and more research on whether patients think the consent was true and useful when viewed after the trip.

Thx Leanne for your contributions to this historic event. One of the most touching parts of the signing ceremony was @NIHDirector_Jay’s tribute to Stanford Professor @NolanRyWilliams whose incredible research on ibogaine was referenced by @POTUS. Thx so much Jay!💗 President Trump gave us a commemorative coin for Nolan which we are sending to Nolan’s Mom (who was invited to the Oval Office to honor the work of her son.)

Today, the @WhiteHouse issued a new Executive Order on “Accelerating Medical Treatments for Serious Mental Illness” a major step toward expanding access to innovative, evidence-based care. Dr. Leanne Williams (@LMWilliams_PhD) was at the White House for the signing and noted: “This is a much needed bold move for precision mental health… accelerating access to personalized, targeted treatments. Our work is developing brain-based tests to understand why treatments work and who they’ll be most effective for. With this mandate, we can accelerate saving lives and getting people well sooner.” A meaningful moment for the future of precision mental health. There is converging evidence that brain networks and neurotransmitter systems modulated by placebo effects may overlap with the therapeutic mechanisms of many psychiatric treatments. There are critical implications of this re: potential ceiling on shared effects, synergism etc!
