Karl Marx spent his life denouncing capitalism, private property and bourgeois "exploitation" - while living as a dependent of a capitalist and treating those around him with casual contempt. Despite railing against the bourgeoisie, Marx never held a steady job and relied almost entirely on financial support from Friedrich Engels, whose wealth came from his family’s textile mills in Manchester. Marx lived in London with his aristocratic wife Jenny, employed a live-in maid and maintained the pretensions of a middle-class intellectual even as his family sank into debt and squalor. Most telling was his treatment of Helene Demuth, the family’s long-serving maid. Marx fathered an illegitimate son with her in 1851. The child, Frederick Demuth, was quietly handed over to Engels to raise as his own, while Marx continued to present himself as a champion of the working class. Several of Marx’s legitimate children died young in conditions of poverty and neglect, even as he worked on Das Kapital in the reading room of the British Museum. Marx’s theories demanded the abolition of private property and the creation of a classless society, but he showed little interest in applying those principles to his own life. He lived off the profits of capitalist enterprise, exploited domestic labour, concealed his own sexual misconduct and left his family in financial ruin. It is, of course, a pattern common among revolutionary intellectuals: the willingness to impose radical equality on others while exempting themselves from its consequences.

Being overweight is FAR deadlier than going on a mini-fast now and then to get back to your target weight. Obesity is the #1 killer. It kills every organ, joint, and bone within the body separately (diabetes, knee failure etc) Compared to obesity, a few hunger pangs is nothing

I have a very simple diet: I have a target weight. I have a scale. I weigh myself daily. If I am over my target weight, I don't eat. I don't eat until I am back at my target weight- whether it takes one day or 10. Any questions?

Spain's anti-nuclear PM told the utilities that the Almaraz nuclear plant will be allowed to operate until 2030 (vs. 2028) only if it met all safety requirements. Spain's regulator confirmed that it would. Will the PM keep his promise? Article link in reply. Or will he stick to his dogma and force it to close anyway. The current government still want to phase out all of Spain's nuclear plants, i.e., Spain's source of reliable, clean power. This, despite high energy costs, reliability problems, and lack of energy security (Iran war). Perhaps we should poll the Spanish people on this topic. This needs to be about more than letting a single plant operate for two more years. Spain needs to keep all of its remaining nuclear plants, and operate them through 2050 (the year when climate goals come due).

Never again, no. I thought I had escaped it with my 3rd major adult relationship. He had a $35k/yr tech job when I met him. And an apartment. Then after 9 months, he quit entirely to move back in with his mom so he could go back to school. He eventually (7 years later) got a useless Business bachelor's. He didn't work for a total of 16 years.

If your partner told you - absent terminal cancer, etc - that they "hated the grind" and were no longer willing to work, would you remain in a relationship with them? Assume that this person would be fine managing the home, and has access to a military pension of $12K/yr.

@WhiteBabyFac It’s not only that. Men are also more likely to die at work than women, because more of them take on dangerous work. Even male Uber drivers earn more.

There should be a pay gap between men and women, because physical strength is important for so many jobs. I used to work in a produce department and the men would always have to unload the produce truck because I just wasn't physically capable of doing that much heavy lifting.

@jeffreytucker It’s also worth remembering that Woodrow Wilson (our worst president since Abraham Lincoln) pressured/incentivized Russia’s provisional government to stay in the war.

The overthrow of the Czar in Russia was motivated by two factors: inflation and the war. The initial desire on the part of reformers was to stop both and establish a republican form of government. The transition government led by Alexander Kerensky failed to achieve the goal, leading to the radicalization of the base and bringing the Bolsheviks to power. From which we can observe: the best way to stop communism is to stop the inflation and the war and return to normalcy. Failed transitional governments are deeply dangerous to human freedom, especially those that do not take inflation seriously and escalate wars.
